Birmingham New Street: Take a Look Inside

From 24 to 30 October 2013, The Gateway to Birmingham Project will be holding its first public exhibition since works started.  The first half of the development was completed and opened in April 2013 so the exhibition will focus on informing passengers about the second and final development phase as well as the end vision of both station and shopping centre.

Network Rail has invited Birmingham based musicians, actors, dancers and artists to perform alongside their information stand in a specially built performance unit dubbed ‘The Box’ which has been designed to replicate the atrium roof in 2015.  It will be a great way to showcase the city's talent and culture.

Network Rail is keen for people to start thinking about how the station and shopping centre will fit together when finished and how the future Birmingham New Street will be a community hub in the heart of the city.

Network Rail is now focused on refurbishing the old station concourse; adding more lifts, escalators and entrances, as well as creating new and exciting spaces within the complex. The project is bringing the vision of a future railway to the present day, with the development bringing more than 20 new cafes, 40 premium shops and the largest John Lewis department store outside of London to the city. These destinations situated above the station will allow visitors to shop, wine and dine in comfort whilst watching the world dash by on the world class concourse below.

Birmingham New Street and Grand Central is an exciting new destination to discover and explore and will finally provide Birmingham with a great first impression to a vibrant city. This dramatic station will help transform Birmingham into a city of the future.

Use the new hashtag #wordonthestreet to share your thoughts and photos on the exhibition and development, and they might appear on the large screen which is going to be erected within the station.

The Department for Transport (DfT) has awarded VRG a franchise contract, which started on 9 December 2012 and will run for up to 23 months. The DfT announced on 26 March 2013 a programme for letting future franchises, with the long-term West Coast franchise expected to start in April 2017.
