Virgin Trains puts on additional services for Lincoln Christmas Market

Virgin Trains will run four additional services to and from Lincoln to Doncaster and Leeds to support the annual Christmas market with tickets starting from just £7.50 one way in Standard Class when booked online at www.virgintrainseastcoast.com.

The Lincoln Christmas Market will take place between 1 and 4 December 2016 and regularly brings more than 250,000 visitors to the historic city.

The Virgin Trains Lincoln Christmas Market services will be made up of an additional return train from Lincoln on the 1 and 2 December at 21.14 arriving into Doncaster at 21.54 and Leeds at 22.43, allowing shoppers extra time to enjoy the evening festivities and cram in as much shopping as possible. On Saturday 3 December there will be an early train at 6.57 from Leeds passing through Doncaster at 07.43 and arriving into Lincoln at 08h36 enabling early risers to make it to Lincoln in time for a coffee before hitting the stalls. After a long day perusing, the additional return train at 20.16 will get into Doncaster at 21.03 and Leeds at 21.44.

These special additional services follow on from the announcement of additional Virgin Trains weekend services to Leeds, York and Edinburgh from Kings Cross from December.

David Horne, Virgin Trains Managing Director, said: “We’re really pleased to be able to put on additional services for the Lincoln Christmas Market again this year. We hope to be able to allow even more customers to get their Christmas shopping done with local merchants and join in with the festive spirits.”

Karl McCartney, MP for Lincoln said: “Christmas shoppers from Lincoln and further afield will be delighted that Virgin Trains East Coast are, once again, running extra rail services between Lincoln, Doncaster and Leeds - to and from our City - on the first Thursday, Friday and Saturday of December. The addition of the Thursday service means that Virgin are actually running one more service than last year.

“Lincoln's Christmas Market is an event in early December that attracts international as well as regional visitors and shoppers. Virgin Trains’ extra services will encourage more people from across our Region to come to Lincoln and enjoy the shopping experience that our City has to offer.

“It’s a win-win situation for all of us.”

Virgin Trains will be continuing to work closely with customers and communities in Lincoln and is encouraging ideas and suggestions about future possibilities for extra services to and from the city.

About Virgin Trains:

Stagecoach and Virgin are working in partnership to operate the East Coast and West Coast inter-city routes under the Virgin Trains brand. Together, they are on track to revolutionise rail travel across the UK.

The combined network connects some of the nation’s most iconic destinations including Glasgow, Liverpool, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Leeds, York and London.

Virgin Trains is committed to delivering a high speed, high frequency service, offering shorter journey times, more comfortable travel and excellent customer service. Customers consistently rate Virgin Trains as one of the top long-distance rail franchise operators in the National Rail Passenger Survey (NRPS) commissioned by industry watchdog, Transport Focus.

On the East Coast route, £140m is being invested to create a more personalised travel experience. We have already invested £21m to completely revamp our existing fleet and customers can now benefit from 42 additional services (22,000 extra seats) per week between Edinburgh and London. 2018 will see the introduction of completely new Azuma trains being built in the UK by Hitachi.

The West Coast route has a proud record of challenging the status quo - from introducing tilting Pendolino trains, to a pioneering automated delay repay scheme and becoming the first franchised rail operator to offer m-Tickets for all ticket types.
