Welsh Co-operatives Mean Business

Three of the most successful co-operative businesses in Wales are exhibiting at a major international trade fair and expo in Manchester this week. Dairy producers Calon Wen, packing specialists Primepac Solutions and renewables specialists Dulas will be joining the Wales Co-operative Centre and The Co-operative Group at the International Co-operative Alliance’s ‘Co-operative’s United’ conference and biennial international trade Expo at the Manchester Central Convention Centre (formerly known as Manchester G-Mex).

The conference and expo, which runs from 29th October to 2nd November, marks the culmination of the United Nations International Year of the Co-operative with a global celebration of co-operative business. The expo is an opportunity for the Welsh co-operative sector to develop trading links with other co-operatives across the world. Wales Co-operative Centre research, commissioned as part of the International Year of Co-operatives, has demonstrated that the co-operative sector in Wales is a key economic driver and this event is an opportunity for the businesses attending to develop trading opportunities across the world.

Calon Wen is a co-operative of 27 family-run farms across Wales who supply organic milk products throughout the UK. The co-operative was developed from a desire to ensure that as much Welsh organic milk is processed in Wales as possible. Since its inception it has developed innovative partnerships with both suppliers and customers and supplies products to most of the main supermarkets in the UK.

Primepac is a worker co-operative created when nineteen staff members invested their redundancy payments in a new employee owned company after the Dutch Company pulled out. They opened a production facility in Ebbw Vale which fills bottles and sachets for clients in a number of sectors. Since they started in 2005 they have grown into a £3 million per year turnover company.

Dulas Ltd was set up by engineers from the Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth to provide professional renewable energy services on a commercial basis. Dulas is owned by its employees, has no external investors and is financed largely through sales. Dulas has won numerous awards for its outstanding performance and innovative products. The company has 110 employees with most at its headquarters in Machynlleth, making it one of the largest employers in the area, as well as an office in Scotland. In 2012, Dulas featured in the Wales Fast Growth 50 for the fourth year in a row.

As well as exhibiting, two of the businesses will also participate in a buyer workshop in front of up to 30 businesses interested in Welsh co-operative produce. Steve Meredith, Sales Director of Primepac Solutions is looking forward to the event, “The ICA Expo is an excellent opportunity to meet with businesses from across the world, to swap ideas, make new contacts and hopefully develop new business opportunities”.

Mike Clay, Marketing Manager at Dulas stated, “We are looking forward to exhibiting at ICA Expo and as we are celebrating our 30th Anniversary in the International Year of the C-ooperatives this will be a landmark moment for us. We hope to hear from organisations interested in how renewable energy can secure power supply, reduce energy costs and deliver the environmental benefits that serve to protect our whole planet”.

Calon Wen’s Marketing Director Richard Arnold states, “Calon Wen is keen to develop and grow its distribution beyond the Welsh borders, with interaction with other cooperative groups high on its agenda”, he continues, “Demonstrating our milk, butter cream and award winning cheeses at an event like ICA Expo, is we hope, going to get us in front of like-minded customers and buyers from across the sector and while its further afield than we’ve ventured recently, we think it looks like it has all the ingredients for an excellent event”.

In Wales, co-operatives and mutuals are estimated to generate in the region of £1billion for the Welsh economy per year. Co-operatives employ in the region of 7,000 people in Wales and the co-operative sector in the UK generates an estimated £25billion in revenue which is equivalent to 2% of UK GDP. The co-operative sector in Wales is sustainable, provides high quality jobs, benefits communities and the environment and is committed to generating growth in Wales.

As well as the Expo activities, the ‘Co-ops in Wales’ stand will feature a host of co-operative related activities. These include daily prize draws to win bottles of Welsh Co-operatively produced Cider, postcards of Welsh co-operatives, cheese tasting and information on the work of the exhibiting co-operatives and the co-operative sector in Wales. Mae Mentrau Cydweithredol Cymru o Ddifrif ynglŷn â Llwyddo

Mae tri o’r mentrau cydweithredol mwyaf llwyddiannus yng Nghymru’n arddangos mewn ffair ac arddangosfa fasnach ryngwladol bwysig ym Manceinion yr wythnos hon. Bydd y busnes cynhyrchion llaeth Calon Wen, yr arbenigwyr mewn deunydd pacio Primepac Solutions, a’r arbenigwyr mewn ynni adnewyddadwy Dulas yn ymuno â Chanolfan Cydweithredol Cymru a The Co-operative Group yng nghynhadledd a ffair fasnach ryngwladol ddwyflynyddol ‘Co-operative’s United’ y Cynghrair Cydweithredol Rhyngwladol yn y Central Convention Centre ym Manceinion (a adwaenid yn flaenorol fel Manchester G-Mex).

Mae’r gynhadledd ac arddangosfa, sy’n rhedeg o 29 Hydref tan 2 Tachwedd, yn nodi penllanw Blwyddyn Ryngwladol Mentrau Cymdeithasol y Cenhedloedd Unedig gyda busnesau cydweithredol yn cael eu dathlu ar hyd a lled y byd. Mae’r arddangosfa’n gyfle i’r sector cydweithredol yng Nghymru ddatblygu cysylltiadau masnach â mentrau cydweithredol eraill ledled y byd. Mae gwaith ymchwil gan Ganolfan Cydweithredol Cymru, a gomisiynwyd fel rhan o Flwyddyn Ryngwladol y Mentrau Cymdeithasol, wedi dangos bod y sector cydweithredol yng Nghymru’n ysgogydd economaidd allweddol ac mae’r digwyddiad hwn yn gyfle i’r busnesau a fydd yn bresennol ddatblygu cyfleoedd masnachu ar hyd a lled y byd.

Mae Calon Wen yn fenter gydweithredol sy’n cynnwys 27 o ffermydd teuluol o bob rhan o Gymru sy’n cyflenwi cynhyrchion llaeth organig ar hyd a lled y DU. Datblygwyd y fenter gydweithredol oherwydd awydd i sicrhau bod cymaint â phosib o laeth organig Cymreig yn cael ei brosesu yng Nghymru. Ers ei sefydlu mae wedi datblygu perthnasoedd arloesol gyda chyflenwyr a chwsmeriaid ac mae’n cyflenwi cynhyrchion i rai o’r prif archfarchnadoedd yn y DU.

Mae Primepac yn fenter gydweithredol y gweithwyr a grëwyd pan fuddsoddodd pedwar ar bymtheg o aelodau o staff eu taliadau diswyddo mewn cwmni newydd a berchnogir gan y gweithwyr wedi i’r Cwmni Isalmaenaidd dynnu allan. Fe agoron nhw gyfleuster cynhyrchu yng Nglyn Ebwy sy’n llenwi poteli a chodenni ar gyfer cleientiaid mewn nifer o sectorau. Ers iddynt ddechrau yn 2005 maent wedi tyfu’n gwmni â throsiant o £3 miliwn y flwyddyn.

Sefydlwyd Dulas Ltd gan beirianwyr o Ganolfan y Dechnoleg Amgen ym Machynlleth i ddarparu gwasanaethau ynni adnewyddadwy proffesiynol ar sail fasnachol. Perchnogir Dulas gan ei weithwyr, nid oes unrhyw fuddsoddwyr allanol ganddo a chaiff ei ariannu i raddau helaeth trwy werthiannau. Mae Dulas wedi ennill nifer o wobrau am ei berfformiad neilltuol a’i gynhyrchion arloesol. Mae gan y cwmni 110 o gyflogeion gyda’r rhan fwyaf yn ei bencadlys ym Machynlleth, sy’n ei wneud yn un o’r prif gyflogwyr yn yr ardal, ac mae ganddo hefyd swyddfa yn yr Alban. Yn 2012, cafodd Dulas ei gynnwys yn rhestr y 50 Cwmni sy’n Tyfu Gyflymaf yng Nghymru am y bedwaredd flwyddyn o’r bron.

Yn ogystal ag arddangos, bydd dau o’r busnesau hefyd yn cyfranogi mewn gweithdy prynwyr o flaen 30 o fusnesau a chanddynt ddiddordeb mewn cynhyrchion gan fentrau cydweithredol o Gymru. Mae Steve Meredith, Cyfarwyddwr Gwerthiant Primetec Solutions, yn edrych ymlaen at y digwyddiad, “Mae ICA Expo yn gyfle gwych i gwrdd â busnesau o bob rhan o’r byd, i gyfnewid syniadau, creu cysylltiadau newydd a, gobeithio, datblygu cyfleoedd busnes newydd”.

Meddai Mike Clay, Rheolwr Marchnata Dulas, “Rydym yn edrych ymlaen at arddangos yn ICA Expo eleni a chan ein bod yn dathlu ein 30ain Pen-blwydd ym Mlwyddyn Ryngwladol y Mentrau Cydweithredol bydd hwn yn achlysur arwyddocaol i ni. Rydym yn gobeithio clywed oddi wrth sefydliadau a chanddynt ddiddordeb yn y modd y gall ynni adnewyddadwy sicrhau cyflenwad o drydan, gostwng costau ynni a dwyn y manteision amgylcheddol sy’n diogelu ein planed gyfan”.

Meddai Cyfarwyddwr Marchnata Calon Wen, Richard Arnold, “Mae Calon Wen yn awyddus i ddatblygu a thyfu ei farchnad dosbarthu y tu hwnt i ffiniau Cymru, ac mae rhyngweithio â grwpiau cydweithredol eraill yn flaenoriaeth fawr iddo”. Meddai drachefn, “Rydym yn gobeithio bod arddangos ein llaeth, hufen menyn a chawsiau gwobrwyol mewn digwyddiad megis ICA Expo yn mynd i’n rhoi yng ngŵydd cwsmeriaid a phrynwyr o’r un anian o bob rhan o’r sector, ac er bod hyn yn bellach nag yr ydym wedi mentro’n ddiweddar, rydym yn meddwl bod y digwyddiad yn argoeli’n un cwbl ardderchog”.

Mae Derek Walker, Prif Weithredwr Canolfan Cydweithredol Cymru, wrth ei fodd i allu gweithio gydag enghreifftiau o fentrau cydweithredol llwyddiannus yng Nghymru a helpu i’w harddangos ar lwyfan rhyngwladol, “Mae Dulas, Primepac a Calon Wen yn brawf bod mentrau cydweithredol o ddifrif ynglŷn â llwyddo ym myd busnes. Yng Nghymru, mae’r sector cydweithredol a chydfuddiannol yn cyfrannu tua £1biliwn tuag at yr economi. Mae’r busnesau hyn yn enghreifftio uchelgais a gallu’r sector cydweithredol yng Nghymru a dymunaf bob lwc iddynt wrth iddynt ddatblygu marchnadoedd newydd ac ennill busnes newydd yn y digwyddiad hwn”.

Meddai Mike Ash-Edwards, Ysgrifennydd Rhanbarthol The Co-operative Group yng Nghymru: “Yng Nghymru y mae gwreiddiau’r mudiad cydweithredol ac mae ffyrdd cydweithredol o weithio’n dal i daro tant gyda chymunedau ar hyd a lled y wlad. Yn ogystal â’r 400 o siopau a changhennau Co-operative a berchnogir gan ein 500,000 o aelodau yng Nghymru, mae nifer o enghreifftiau eraill o gydweithredu ar waith sy’n haeddu cael eu dathlu yn ystod Blwyddyn Ryngwladol Mentrau Cydweithredol y Cenhedloedd Unedig. Rydym yn edrych ymlaen yn fawr at gydweithio gyda Chanolfan Cydweithredol Cymru i arddangos model busnes moesegol sy’n rhoi rheolaeth yn nwylo gweithwyr, aelodau a chymunedau lleol.”

Yng Nghymru, amcangyfrifir bod mentrau cydweithredol a chydfuddiannol yn creu tua £1biliwn i economi Cymru bob blwyddyn. Mae mentrau cydweithredol yn cyflogi tua 7,000 o bobl yng Nghymru ac mae’r sector cydweithredol yn y DU yn cynhyrchu £25biliwn mewn refeniw yn ôl yr amcangyfrifon sy’n cyfateb i 2% o CMC y DU. Mae’r sector cydweithredol yng Nghymru’n gynaliadwy, yn darparu swyddi o ansawdd uchel, yn dwyn manteision i gymunedau a’r amgylchedd ac yn ymrwymedig i ysgogi twf yng Nghymru.

Yn ogystal â’r gweithgareddau yn Expo, bydd y stondin ‘Mentrau Cydweithredol yng Nghymru’ yn cynnal llu o weithgareddau sy’n gysylltiedig â mentrau cydweithredol. Mae’r rhain yn cynnwys rafflau dyddiol i ennill poteli o Seidr a gynhyrchwyd gan fentrau cydweithredol yng Nghymru, cardiau post gyda manylion mentrau cydweithredol yng Nghymru, cyfle i flasu caws a gwybodaeth am waith y mentrau cydweithredol sy’n arddangos a’r sector cydweithredol yng Nghymru.
