GAHCC Board Endorses 10-1 Plan
Chamber Voices Their Best Interest for the Community

Austin, Texas (June 27, 2012) – The board of the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GAHCC) met today and voted unanimously to endorse the “10-1, Single-Member” structure of government for the City  of Austin. "Our board, which represents over 1,000 business members, was decisive in its support of the 10-1 plan that provides not only broader representation by our diverse electorate, but is also a model that we hope will provide more accountability and involvement from a wider array of Austin’s citizens," said Andy Martinez, CEO/president, GAHCC.

Additionally, the GAHCC board calls on City Council to submit only one Single-Member district option to the voters in November. The GAHCC board is concerned that two plans will dilute the voting results and that Single-Member Districts will not pass, once again.

In addition to the structure, the Board also unanimously supports November elections in even numbered years, to build civic engagement. “For too long, we have accepted embarrassing turnouts for our local elections and we look forward to reversing that trend," said George Gutierrez, chair, GAHCC board of directors.
