Carbon monoxide kills, founder sends warning to storm victims on the east coast of USA

Rob Aiers says that it is vital that people are aware of the dangers of locating generators at a safe distance from dwellings or other areas where people are sheltered. Now the worst of the initial storm has past and the death and injury toll has been incredibly low for such a huge event, it would be tragic to see people die after the event through lack of understanding. Under the circumstances users of generators can just get to work without realising that they must locate the generator far enough away from buildings to put the exhaust gases away from areas where they may find there way into buildings. It is also important to make sure that the prevailing wind conditions, you also have to make sure that the units are not also put too close to neighbouring buildings that may also house sheltering people. Often generators come with no instructions, or manuals that are inadequate. Generators must be located as far away from buildings as possible to ensure that gases are not driven Ito building vents or windows. The best advise would be to have a carbon monoxide detector in the building so that safety can be assured. If this is not the case toxic fumes can get into the building and slowly poison inhabitants. If he power out last any length of time even low levels can be very dangerous over an extended period, the lower level recognised by the W.H.O. Is only 9ppm over a 24 house period, this is much lower than some of the safety organisations have now indicated. Dr. David Penney the world foremost toxicologist states that that zero the only real safe limit.
