🇬🇧 Did you know that a volcanic eruption 1.7 billion years ago saved people form Älvdalen, Dalarna from distress? 🌋
Over time, the volcanic ash formed the rock porphyry that would become Dalarna’s landscape stone.
In the 1770s, a employment crisis arose and Älvdalen was hit hard.
Count Niels Bielke saw that a porphyry mill would be a favorable business for the area and in 1788 the ”Älvdalens porfyrverk” was founded.
Candlesticks, urns, mortars, table tops, etc. were created but also magnificent pieces for royal houses and when the company ran into financial difficulties it was bought by the king of Sweden in 1818. 👑

In 1823 the king ordered a monumental version of an antique vase. The vase weighs 9.3 tons and took two years to complete, 3,500 days’ work with 40 people employed. It took 200 men five weeks to drag the stone vase to Rosendal Castle in Stockholm.

In 1867, the large workshop burned down. Fortunately some of the machines could be saved, and 30 years later ”Älvdalens nya porfyrverk” was built and was in use until 1984.
Today you can see many of the beautiful objects that were created at the Porphyry Museum in Älvdalen and visit ”Älvdalen nya porfyrverk” to get an insight into Älvdalen’s industrial history.
