Press release -

470,000 cruise passengers are expected in Stockholm in 2014

Stockholm is a popular cruise destination for cruise lines and cruise passengers. In 2014, an estimated 274 international cruise ships with a total of about 470,000 passengers, will arrive at Ports of Stockholm.

Stockholm continues to grow in popularity.¨

Both shipowners and cruise ship travelers rate Stockholm as one of the most popular destinations in the world. Last year, cruise ship travelers voted Stockholm Europe’s Best Cruise Destination; the city was in competition with Norwegian fjords, Saint Petersburg, Barcelona and Venice. The award is presented by Cruise International Magazine.

“Investments in recent years in modernized cruise terminals, revamped docks, and the great collaboration within the Stockholm Cruise Network has made Stockholm more and more attractive for international cruises,” says Henrik Ahlqvist, Manager Cruise & Ferry, Deputy Harbor Master, Ports of Stockholm.

Stockholm’s offering expands

Stockholm’s wide selection of activities suits people looking for organized tours, as well as those who want to discover the city on their own. And the players in the Stockholm Cruise Network continually develop products to reach new target groups, such as families with children and the incentive and LGBT segments.

“Cruise passengers choose Stockholm for all it has to offer as Scandinavia’s premier travel destination, whether it be food, museums, design, shopping, or music. Thanks to its compact size, the city is a perfect cruise destination for daytrippers as well as turnarounds,” says Claudia Quas, project manager of Stockholm Cruise Network.

Stockholm is a popular destination for cruise passengers. A recent survey showed that 97% of passengers go ashore in Stockholm and spend an average of 5.9 hours on land, compared to a European average of 87% and 4.8 hours.

“Stockholm’s hotels and attractions are generally considered ‘high class,’ and the city itself gets very high customer satisfaction ratings on shore excursions. Ever the dynamic city, Stockholm continues to entice passengers with new attractions and events each year,” says Claudia Quas.

Sharp environmental focus in StockholmPorts of Stockholm is one of the few harbors in the world that can manage black and gray water, and during the winter, several reception facilities were improved considerably.

All expected cruise arrivals are included in the ship list on the Ports of Stockholm website and in the CruiseSthlm app for iPhone and Android phones, which you can download for free from the App Store and Google Play.
