A family in the wilderness

High waves, heavy snowfall, small children and lots of luggage to transport over the icy sea. The trip to Nordkvaløya island in Troms began as a real challenge for Selma (3), Alice (6) and their parents Martin and Helena.

6 months earlier, we were sitting at home in Gothenburg discussing our annual spring skiing holiday. We had already decided that it should be slightly longer than usual this time, but where should we actually go? A few years earlier, we spent some time in Tromsø, and when our thoughts returned again to that region, we remembered that Nordkvaløya had not yet been ticked off the list of places we wanted to visit.

And so it was decided. We rented a cabin on the north of the island, with no electricity or water. After weeks of detailed planning how to manage life as a family with small children on a remote island, we arrived in Tromsø with a huge amount of luggage. We then sailed out to the island in an RIB operated by a local guide.

As we approached the coast of Nordkvaløya, however, the waves were so high that the skipper was sceptical about landing. He thought the boat could be damaged if it hit the rocks on the beach. Luckily there was a rowing boat moored to a buoy in the bay. After four trips back and forth in the rowing boat, the children and our luggage were safely ashore. It was already getting dark as we arrived – wet and hungry – at the cabin. After lighting the wood stove, we had a quick snack before going to bed early. We were all excited about the following day and discovering this new place that would be the family home for the next 17 days.

Taking a break from everyday life, with only the family, was real quality time. And we had a fantastic time in the wilderness. Everyday life was peaceful, and it was absolutely no problem that all the daily tasks took time. There was nothing we had to do, no deadlines to meet. Instead of mobiles, computers and TV, we had games, toys and discovery tours.

Now we are definitely ready for similar adventures.
