Zaluvida announces possibility to neutralize the emissions of all cars in Kazakhstan

Astana | 10.08.2017

Zaluvida, a Swiss-based pioneering life science company, announced a disruptive and new approach to immediately reduce greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions at the Future Energy Forum as part of the World Expo in Kazakhstan. Due to the slow transition to green technologies, an immediate and significant reduction of GHGs is required. Cows are the biggest producers of methane, at a daily rate of 500 liters per cow and produce more damaging emissions than an average car. Urgent action is needed to lower methane emissions as it is 84x more potent than CO2 in the 20 years targeted by the UN Paris Agreement to keep global warming under 2 degrees. If emissions from cows were reduced by 30% globally, a total of 1.3 Gigaton CO2e would not be released into the atmosphere – the equivalent of 500 million cars being taken off the road.

Mootral, developed by Zaluvida, is a natural feed supplement that immediately cuts methane emissions from cows by a minimum of 30 percent. The feed supplement at the same time improves the health of the animals and protects our environment.

Speaking at the Expo 2017’s Future Energy Forum, Michael Mathres, President of the Mootral division at Zaluvida, said: “While there is much talking about reducing greenhouse gases, we see today the opportunity for immediate action. Giving Mootral to 1.8 million Kazakh cows would neutralize the emissions of all cars currently on the country’s streets. Kazakhstan can be a forerunner in this field when appropriate action is taken now - and other countries should follow.”

Mathres called on the Kazakh government and industry to pioneer in fighting methane emissions by sponsoring the feed supplement of Kazakh cows for the duration of one year, thereby neutralizing the average CO2 emissions of all cars in the country.
