AkzoNobel sells Carbide Sweden

AkzoNobel and SKW Stahl-Metallurgie Holding AG announce that they have today signed an agreement whereby SKW Stahl-Metallurgie Holding AG will acquire all of the assets of Carbide Sweden AB.

Carbide Sweden produces and markets calcium carbide, a raw material used in the production of acetylene gas, which is used for welding and other applications. Carbide is also used in steel production.  "Our customers are located in the Nordic region and Central Europe. We have Scandinavia's sole carbide plant. The sale is ideal for the continued development of Carbide Sweden, since the buyer holds a strong position in the European steel industry," says Tommy Engman, President of Carbide Sweden.

The approximately 50 employees at the plant, which is located in Stockvik, outside Sundsvall, Sweden, were informed of the sale on Friday, December 17. All employees will be offered employment with the new owner.

Kjell Sundqvist, shift-working operator and union representative at Carbide Sweden is pleased with today's announcement. "I think this is excellent. Having previously been a non-core operation within AkzoNobel, we will now join an owner with expertise in, and focus on, minerals and steel handling, which is our area of operations."

According to the agreement, the buyer, German specialist chemicals company SKW Stahl-Metallurgie Holding AG, will assume responsibility for the operations during the first quarter of 2011.
