Original Calvin and Hobbes Daily Strip Achieves £116,160 at Auction
Last Thursday, two days after the 40 year jubilee of the first publication of Calvin and Hobbes, Stockholms Auktionsverk — the world’s oldest auction house — sold an original Calvin and Hobbes daily comic strip for an impressive £116,160.
The now-cult daily strip Calvin and Hobbes, sometimes described as the last great newspaper comic, was created by Bill Watterson and ran from 1985 to 1995. When the very first strip appeared in November 1985, it was printed in 35 newspapers. Its popularity grew at remarkable speed; within just a few years it appeared in hundreds of papers, and at its peak it was published in an astonishing 2,400 newspapers worldwide.
David Brolin, Specialist at Auctionet, expresses his delight over the result:
“An original Calvin and Hobbes strip by Bill Watterson is considered one of the true rarities in the world of comic art collecting. It is an honour — and a once-in-a-lifetime experience — to have been part of this extraordinary sale.”
The final Calvin and Hobbes strip was published on December 31, 1995, and Bill Watterson has since largely withdrawn from public life. Today, more than 3,000 of his works are held at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum at Ohio State University. Original artworks such as the one sold here are therefore exceptionally rare on the open market.
