Press release —

Over 4 million items sold on Auctionet!

In mid-October, the four millionth item was sold. Today, Auctionet is Europe’s leading marketplace for auctions, with more than 80 connected auction houses selling art, design, antiques, collectibles, and much more. The number of items sold and the number of connected auction houses both point to a rapid pace of growth.

Since the first items went under the hammer on Auctionet in December 2011, development has been swift, and it is now accelerating. The one millionth item was sold in June 2020. That figure doubled in March 2023. Almost exactly two years later, 3 million items had been sold, and the 4 million mark has now been passed. Niklas Söderholm, founder and CEO, is proud of the progress:

“Back in 2011, we were convinced that online auctions were the future, and that is even more true today. Bidders and buyers can just as easily be in Japan or Spain as in Canada or Argentina. The growth has been very strong! Having sold more than 4 million items before our 15th anniversary in December is fantastic.”

Among the most memorable items ever sold on Auctionet is a mandarin hat that went under the hammer in October 2021 at the Spanish auction house Balclis. Interest was enormous, and the bidding stopped only a little above SEK 6,600,000. The following month, the world’s most expensive IKEA piece of furniture, the Cavelli armchair, was sold at Stadsauktion Sundsvall. The sale made news in papers around the world. A rarity of a very different kind is a 1912 Pierce Four motorcycle, which, 111 years after it was assembled, sold for just over SEK 960,000 at Sajab Vintage.

In 2021, Auctionet acquired the world’s oldest auction house, Stockholms Auktionsverk. Since then, many spectacular items have been sold there. Andy Warhol’s painting “Frölunda Hockey Player” is one of them. A sculpture by Johan Tobias Sergel is another. Of particular cultural-historical interest is Louis Palander af Vega’s private collection from the Vega Expedition of 1878–1880, the first voyage through the Northeast Passage in history. Including fees, it sold for more than SEK 25 million.

The first item sold on Auctionet was a chest of drawers in Gustavian style. It was knocked down for SEK 5,058 on 4 December 2011. It took just over 8 years to reach one million items sold. Since then, the number of items sold has increased very rapidly. The graph above shows the steep growth curve. All 4 million items can be viewed in Auctionet’s open archive, where anyone can explore items and prices and be inspired.
