THE WRITE STUFF: AUTHOR’S COLLECTION YIELDS £81,000 FOR CHARITY

Auctionet was honoured to host a live charity auction on behalf of Bishop & Miller Auctioneers. The sale comprised personal items belonging to international best seller book author, Lucinda Riley, and the auction raised money for the benefit of the charity United World Schools.

Following the successful sale of the Ed Sheeran collection, Bishop & Miller were selected specifically by Lucinda Riley’s family after a tragedy inspired them to act in support of United World Schools.

Lucinda was born in 1965 in Drumbeg in Northern Ireland, living there for five years before moving to Leicestershire. Her father encouraged her writing. He travelled the world for work and always returned, sometimes unexpectedly, with a gift for her from wherever he had been. Then he would tell her stories about the places he had visited, his anecdotes often enlightened with vivid descriptions of the characters he had met on his travels.

In later life, Lucinda was afflicted with what has now been diagnosed as Epstein Barr virus. Whilst bedbound and beset with fatigue, she decided to begin writing down a story that had been in her head for some time. She found that she could use her imagination to take her out of the difficult ‘real’ world: it was both a revelation and therapy of the best kind.

Bishop & Miller’s Managing Director, Oliver Miller said:

“We were honoured to have been appointed on behalf of the Riley family to curate and auction this outstanding collection of personal items from one of the world’s most successful contemporary authors. This incredible collection showcases her impeccable sense of style, including some beautiful couture fashion items, jewellery and accessories, as well as her altruistic nature. We are delighted with the results and strong bidding across the sale showed a huge demand for luxury goods. The family decided that the proceeds will all be going to charity. Overall it was a great result and for a great cause. The sale doubled expectations, helped along by global bidders attracted to the author’s auction of luxury jewellery and fashion.”

A run of exceptional prices throughout the sale included £8,400 for a Cartier 18ct white gold and diamond love bangle; and £2,200 for a Chanel tweed jacket. Determined bidding for the latter item took the price far above its £200-300 estimate.

The auction raised the substantial sum of £81,000 (check) for United World Schools. The charity works to give children access to quality, inclusive education in remote and marginalised communities. You can read more about UWS: https://uwsglobal.net/
