How to save money on your subscription services

In 2021, 73% of Germans had two or more streaming subscriptions[i]. You may want to research which subscriptions and streaming services you pay for each month, as there might be money to save.

The pool of streaming services is large and growing larger, with new players added constantly. Many of us have several subscriptions, which can mean that it is easy to lose track of which subscriptions you have active and how much you spend on them.

- If you pay for your subscription services with the Bank Norwegian card, you can easily get an overview of which subscriptions you have registered on your card via the "My purchases" service, says Melita Ringvold, Head of Communications and Sustainability at Bank Norwegian.

Get an overview with "My purchases"

Collecting all subscription services into one card gives you a good overview. In the Bank Norwegian app, you can see all your subscriptions in the "My purchases" service. My Purchases sorts your transactions into categories such as "subscription services". Here you can see all your subscription services that are charged to your card, such as Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video.

- If you have subscriptions that you do not use regularly, you should consider whether you need them. There can be money saved by going from five streaming services to three, says Ringvold

Some simple tips

  • Check that the household is not paying for several of the same subscriptions services.
  • Certain streaming services allow the household to have a joint subscription. This applies, for example, to Spotify, Netflix, and Disney+. Depending on the subscription, you can save around NOK 1,000 a year.
  • Take advantage of the free trial period that many streaming services offer. This gives you time to assess whether the service is suitable for you before you start paying for it. If you are not satisfied, you must remember to end the subscription before the trial period is over.
