Bel Group Chooses BKtech Biomass Technology to Power Renewable Industrial Expansion in Spain

Bel Group – one of the world’s leading food manufacturers, with a presence in more than 120 countries — has chosen BKtech Group as its bioenergy partner for a major industrial expansion at its Ulzama site in Navarra, Spain. The newly commissioned biomass boiler, delivered by BKtech, is now fully operational, delivering 100% renewable process steam to the site.

The project is a central part of Bel’s decarbonization roadmap and enables a reduction of approximately 500 tons of CO₂ emissions per year, roughly the same as the annual carbon emissions from 2 million kilometres driven by an average petrol car. At the same time, it supports a 15% production increase, including two new packaging lines for The Laughing Cow® – one of Bel’s most iconic global brands.

"The challenge was to find a technology capable of meeting our thermal needs without relying on fossil fuels,” says Iñigo Purroy, Plant Manager at Bel Ulzama. “This new system delivers energy exactly when and where it’s needed – with the required intensity and with renewable energy. It’s a technical success that allows us to maintain product quality while advancing our sustainability goals".

BKtech Group’s, Energy Center at Ulzama is part of a growing number of modular, prefabricated steam solutions delivered across Europe. Designed for operational efficiency, low emissions, and minimal disruption to client operations, these systems are adopted across the food, beverage, packaging, and process industries.

"BKtech is committed to playing a key role in Europe’s green transition by promoting sustainable and innovative energy solutions,” says John Robinson, Director at BKtech France. “We are delighted to continue our development and honoured to be able to support the Bel Group in its advanced decarbonisation efforts at its Ulzama site".

This approach is not only a technical achievement. It’s also a signal of how global manufacturers can lead the energy transition at scale without compromising efficiency, reliability, or future scalability.

"These projects illustrate Bel’s two‑leg model, where sustainability and profitability advance together, says Stéphane Dupays, Chief Operations Officer at Bel Group. The Ulzama site is now powered by renewable energy and is expanding to support future growth. It’s a perfect example of how our sustainability commitments go hand in hand with industrial performance and local development".

In addition to traditional ownership models, BKtech also offers Green Steam on Demand — a service-based concept in which clients pay for renewable steam without the need to invest in or operate the infrastructure.
