2026 Marks the End of the Solar Maximum Era. Here is How You Can Catch the Peak

OSLO, NORWAY, October 2026

The solar peak may be slowly ending, but winter 2026–2027 still represents a once-in-a-lifetime type of timing for a Northern Lights holiday. Booknordics.com is strengthening its Northern Lights holiday offering from Tromsø, bringing accommodation and selected winter experiences together into complete Arctic journeys.

The UK Met Office says observations suggest solar maximum occurred during 2024 and 2025. Activity is now declining, but strong storms will likely still occur. NOAA expects space weather activity to remain elevated for the next few years.

For travellers who want a structured trip, a Northern Lights holiday package can simplify planning. It connects the main parts of the journey and gives the holiday more to offer than one evening’s aurora search.

More than one evening searching for Lady Aurora Borealis

Booknordics.com’s current listings include four-, six- and eight-day Northern Lights holiday packages beginning in Tromsø, with the longer itinerary continuing through Northern Norway to Alta, the Northern Lights Capital of Norway.

With a Northern Lights holiday package from Booknordics.com, travellers maximise their chances in this last year of the peak period. Holiday packages include hand-picked Northern Lights excursions led by local guides with a strong track record of hunting down the auroras. Every package includes no fewer than three tries to maximise chances.

Depending on the package, accommodation, transfers and selected winter experiences are connected within the journey. One four-day option combines Tromsø and the Lyngen Alps with a Northern Lights safari, snowshoeing and an overnight Crystal Lavvo stay.

Northern Lights sightings cannot be guaranteed. Solar activity, darkness and clear skies all affect visibility.

“We want to maximise the chances of our guests seeing the Northern Lights. With us, they can book the complete Northern Lights holiday and experience the auroras like a local,” said Christer Olsen, CEO of Booknordics.com.

Further winter holidays in development

More Northern Lights and winter holidays are in development, with further journeys across the Nordics planned before the end of 2026.

Separately, Booknordics.com is developing its Signature Holiday Collection for Iceland, Finland and Sweden. These holidays remain in development and are distinct from the Tromsø Northern Lights range.
