Boråstapeter in unique collaboration with Bea Szenfeld

We have previously seen Bea Szenfeld’s paper creations worn by guests at the Nobel Prize banquet. The well-known fashion designer is now partnering with Boråstapeter to craft a collection of garments out of wallpaper.

The fantastic dress made of paper that the Swedish politician Alice Bah Kuhnke wore to the Nobel Prize banquet was widely admired for its unique craftsmanship and expressive design. Boråstapeter has now entered into an exciting collaborative partnership with Bea Szenfeld, the creator of that dress, to produce a collection of clothing crafted from wallpaper.

We wanted to work with Bea because she is amazing at expressing herself through her paper couture. Creating a collection of garments with Bea will be a unique way of showcasing our wallpapers, says Åse Peterson, Brand & Product Director at Boråstapeter.

The results are two creations, inspired by the 1700s, and it was completely obvious for Bea which wallpaper to choose.

As soon as I found out that Boråstapeter had Gocken Jobs’ wallpaper, the choice was easy. I adore the designs, colour schemes and the way the Jobs sisters arrange their designs. When I use wallpaper to create clothes, the reverse side is just as important as the printed side, because when I fold the design the reverse side changes character too. Wallpaper has an agenda of its own. But the advantages of wallpaper are that it is durable and its texture feels almost like wool, Bea says.

Unlike previous paper creations, working with wallpaper has been “character forming”, as Bea puts it. Wallpaper comes in rolls and does not behave like A4 sheets of paper, which don’t move when you’ve folded them. Bea had to find new techniques for folding the paper to achieve the rigidness she wants.

Bea Szenfeld’s paper creations are on display at the Textile Museum in Borås, and will be presented in the May issue of Boråstapeter’s Wallpaper Magazine.
