World’s Most Complicated Patek Philippe Watch Up for Auction

An iconic wristwatch from the esteemed Patek Philippe brand is set to go under the hammer at the Danish auction house Bruun Rasmussen on December 11, with an estimated value of DKK 900,000–1.1 million.

A cornerstone piece in any serious Patek collection. That is the simplest way to describe this watch – the reference 3970, first introduced in 1986.

“Collectors worldwide consider the reference 3970 one of the most sought-after complicated wristwatches ever made. Although it is a rare model, it is at the same time an iconic and very typical Patek Philippe watch,” says Frederik Plum, Head of Wristwatches at Bruun Rasmussen.

A Technical and Aesthetic Masterpiece

What sets the reference 3970 apart are two exceptional features: a chronograph and a perpetual calendar, capable of automatically adjusting for month lengths, including leap years. Together, they create a harmonious synthesis of two of horology’s most prestigious complications.

“The 3970 is a true masterpiece—both technically and aesthetically. It embodies the mechanical poetry for which Patek Philippe is renowned,” Plum adds.

A Collector’s Treasure

Produced between 1986 and 2004, the reference 3970 was made in four series, each distinguished by subtle details, from dial layouts to case markings, making each version a highly prized collector’s item. Today, only around 4,000 examples are believed to exist. The piece up for auction belongs to the highly sought-after second series, of which only approximately 650 were produced.

“The reference 3970 bridges vintage and modern Patek Philippe. Traditional craftsmanship and classic proportions, yet built in the contemporary era with reliability and wearability in mind. Many see it as the last truly “old-world” Patek grand complication,” explains Plum.

“It lies in the sweet spot where pedigree, rarity, craftsmanship, and historical importance all converge,” he concludes.

The Patek Philippe reference 3970 will be auctioned at Bruun Rasmussen on December 11 at 7 PM. Go to the auction and read more about the watch HERE.
