Burckhardt Compression delivers sustainable turnaround: high-pressure air compressors restored to full operational life
Burckhardt Compression announces a striking example of engineering excellence and environmental stewardship: two high-pressure air compressor units, previously considered non-operational, have been fully restored to like-new condition - illustrating the power of refurbishment over replacement.
Originally installed onboard a vessel, these compressor units were slated for disposal following the customer’s lifecycle estimation guidelines. During an inspection, however, Burckhardt Compression’s team in India discovered the compressor cores remained intact and salvageable. Through a rigorous refurbishment process, the equipment was re-commissioned to meet full operating parameters — including a Factory Acceptance Test at 400 bar gauge — and delivered back into service.
Highlights of the project include:
- Thorough project planning and rapid turnaround executed in 24-hour shifts to meet urgent schedule constraints.
- A full service scope covering comprehensive inspection, refurbishment of reusable components, replacement of only those parts that were irrecoverable (e.g., corroded motors and panels).
- Restored compressor systems that are fully operational.
- Significant cost savings compared with procuring new equipment.
- Extended asset lifespan, reducing waste and the associated environmental footprint
Substantial benefits for the customer:
Affirmation of Burckhardt Compression’s commitment to the circular economy, and its leadership in sustainable, reliable service solutions
A representative of the customer, the Material Organisation in Visakhapatnam, commented:
"We were impressed by the transformation of what was once considered non-operational into fully functional, high-performing compressors. The Factory Acceptance Test at 400 barg exceeded our expectations, and the professionalism of the Burckhardt Compression India team was commendable."
Why this matters
In heavy industry, high-pressure compressors represent a significant investment in capital, energy and maintenance. The ability to revitalise existing assets instead of replacing them not only drives cost savings for customers, but also helps reduce material consumption, waste and CO₂ emissions. This project showcases how targeted refurbishment can deliver both commercial and environmental value.
