Press release -

Burckhardt Compression secures landmark order for world’s first Ammonia Bunkering Vessel in cooperation with Nissin Gas Engineering

Burckhardt Compression, a global leader in reciprocating compressor systems, has been awarded a contract to deliver its proven Laby® Compressor technology for the world’s first purpose-built ammonia bunkering vessel in cooperation with Nissin Gas Engineering, a leading global manufacturer of liquefaction systems with expertise in refrigeration technology for liquefied petroleum gas, ammonia gas and others. This milestone project marks a key advance in the maritime industry’s transition toward zero-carbon fuels.

The vessel, commissioned by Itochu Corporation with its Singapore-based subsidiary Clean Ammonia Bunkering Shipping Pte. Ltd. (CABS) and built by Sasaki Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., will be the first ship designed specifically to supply ammonia as a marine fuel. Scheduled for delivery in 2027, the 5,000 m³ capacity vessel will play a critical role in developing the global ammonia bunkering infrastructure necessary to decarbonize shipping.

Supporting the future of Marine decarbonization

Burckhardt Compression’s Laby® Compressor will be a key component in the vessel’s fuel handling system, designed to enable the safe and efficient transfer of ammonia during bunkering operations. Known for its hermetic sealing and oil-free operation, the Laby® technology ensures zero leakage, high reliability, and safe handling of toxic or corrosive gases such as ammonia.

"This order underscores our strong commitment to enabling the maritime energy transition," said Andreas Brautsch of Burckhardt Compression. "Our Laby® technology is ideally suited for the demanding requirements of ammonia service, combining decades of experience in cryogenic gas handling with cutting-edge safety and environmental performance."

A key step toward net-zero shipping

As global shipping accelerates efforts to reach net-zero emissions, ammonia has emerged as a leading candidate for next-generation marine fuels. Burckhardt Compression’s participation in this pioneering project strengthens its position as a trusted technology partner for shipbuilders, operators, and fuel infrastructure developers seeking sustainable solutions.

"We are proud to contribute to this historic first for the industry," added Andreas Brautsch. "The successful operation of this ammonia bunkering vessel will help set the standards for future clean-fuel supply chains worldwide."
