Advocating for Nature: A guide for responsible policy engagement

Businesses that are serious about meeting their objectives around nature protection, restoration and sustainable use know that the right enabling environment supported by government policies and regulations is critical to accelerate progress. By advocating for pro-nature measures, and intervening when trade groups lobby against them, businesses can help the adoption of policies that unlock investment, deliver action at scale and contribute to a nature-positive economy faster.

To this end, the Nature Responsible Policy Engagement (RPE) guide from Business for Nature enables companies to reap the business benefits of responsible advocacy and respond to rising stakeholder expectations. It provides the steps companies should take to match their nature advocacy to their nature ambition and actively engage in advocating responsibly to policymakers.

Business leaders can:

  1. Commit to support ambitious policy
  2. Align trade associations
  3. Allocate advocacy spending
  4. Speak out publicly
  5. Disclose advocacy activities

The guide is adapted from and aligned with the We Mean Business Coalition and Ceres Responsible Policy Engagement (RPE) Framework for Climate.
