Camfil Supports ESG initiatives
In 2006, the United Nations (UNFI) introduced an ESG framework that has since been widely adopted by companies, enterprises, and non-profit organizations. One way to meet ESG goals is by implementing improved air filtration which can help save energy.
The ESG framework sets key performance indicators (KPIs) for environmental, social, and governance goals.
- These KPIs focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, energy usage, and waste, as well as promoting employee well-being
- By setting KPIs and measuring progress towards environmental, social, and governance goals, ESG contributes to long-term success through financial stability, increased transparency, reduced corruption, employee retention, stakeholder awareness, better reputations, and higher equity returns
- High levels of employee satisfaction and productivity are also associated with strong ESG performance, ultimately leading to better results
How can ESG goals be achieved with better air filtration measures?
ESG goals can be achieved by implementing a thorough strategy to reduce energy consumption in ESG scopes 2 and 3. This can be done by replacing inefficient HVAC systems with energy-efficient systems. High quality air filters and variable frequency drive fans (VFDs) can reduce energy consumption and provide cleaner workspaces by ramping down when there are less people in a building, typically in the evening and early morning.
Air filters with low average resistance to airflow should be used as HVAC systems account for over 50% of a building’s energy usage. Of this amount, 15% is directly related to HVAC air filters while lighting accounts for 17-19%. High-performance air filters last much longer, reduce materials usage, GHG emissions, transportation, maintenance, labour, warehousing, and landfill waste.
Air filters with MERV and MERV-A ratings ensure particle capture efficiency. Electrostatic charge filters decrease efficiency as dirt loads, reducing MERV value. Choosing MERV-A rated air filters ensures maximum energy efficiency and the best indoor air quality over a longer period of time.
By maintaining a high level of air filtration, heating and cooling coils are kept cleaner and can work more efficiently using less energy to heat or cool the building. Better air filtration also helps reduce the amount of dust and allergens, as well as PM2.5 and PM1 circulating in the air, creating a healthier indoor environment for occupants.
