Friday, we celebrated all the amazingly talented and passionate women in engineering in Chr. Hansen, marking this year’s International Day of Women in Engineering 🎉 Women are still underrepresented in many STEM fields, so by highlighting the great career opportunities within this field; we hope to inspire more women to pursue an education and career within technology, engineering, mathematics and science. Three Hansenites, Mette, Lia, and Winnie, all working in Global Engineering in Chr. Hansen, did a takeover on our Instagram last week. Here they showed a glimpse of what their daily work looks like 👷‍♀️ Before the takeover, we asked them to share what led them to pursue a career in engineering and what their thoughts are on the diversity of women in the field of engineering 👭 Here is what Mette Østergaard Andersen, Head of Global Support in Global Engineering, said: “Being an engineer gives you so many opportunities. It opens a world that you had not foreseen. I would encourage other women to pursue the possibility of developing both themselves and their technical abilities. Being selfish, I need to say that we need more women in engineering. It's a wrap! 🙌🏼 The annual Folkemøde on the Baltic island of Bornholm was a fireworks display of biosolutions activities and Chr. Hansen was fortunate to take part in an array of events. As a new feature, the Novo Nordisk Foundation Alliance for Biosolutions and DI - Dansk Industri had set up a BioScenen and BioLounge, showcasing all aspects of biological solutions 🌱 From the world’s first fermented biosolutions designer cardigan made from fermented grass juice by Pond Biomaterials and Henrik Vibskov, to on-stage fermentation demos, alternative proteins, the role of the CFO in the green transition, plant-based food, Denmark as a fermentation nation, and so much more, we want to thank all of our great friends and collaborators for their time and efforts to raise a spectacular biosolutions flag over Bornholm. Meet Lorenzo 🌿 A passionate scientist and department manager in Plant Health. Lorenzo has worked in Chr. Hansen’s Application Center in Taastrup for the past seven years and has had an instrumental role in building the department that today consists of nine people with seven different nationalities. Lorenzo discovered his interest in natural science already as a kid. Today, he has built his career around one of his big passions: plants 🌱 Since he started as an industrial postdoc student in Chr. Hansen seven years ago, he has had the opportunity to transition into a managerial role as a department manager. To Lorenzo, being a Hansenite means being in an environment where you respect, learn from, and admire each other. “I really can’t stress enough how grateful I am for the people I work with. Is the food you eat safe? 🤔 Today is World Food Safety Day. All the players in the global food supply chain are responsible for food safety. And with over 1 billion people consuming a product containing our ingredients every day, Chr. Hansen has an enormous responsibility for quality and product safety toward global consumers. The World Health Organization’s data shows that there are approximately 200 diseases caused by unsafe food, and an estimated 1,600,000 people get sick daily. “When we eat, we have indirectly trusted everyone involved in the food chain – from growing, processing, packaging and distributing to preparing the food correctly to enjoy it without falling ill. Food is safe when everyone involved in making it follows established food safety practices. These food standards form the bedrock of trust for all consumers around the world. And as a global ingredients supplier to the food chain, we have a huge responsibility to ensure we play our part in meeting product safety and quality standards,” explains Niels Kau, vice president of Quality Assurance. To support continuous improvement, a campaign on quality and product safety was recently launched at three of our sites – site Copenhagen in Denmark and sites West Allis and New Berlin in the US as an expansion of the existing Food safety program. The campaign includes e-learning and a survey to raise awareness and understanding of the importance of a quality and product safety mindset among all Hansenites. “The campaign will evolve to include all sites. Not only because it is a requirement for our license to operate to continually communicate, train, measure and ensure feedback from all Hansenites, but also to continuously embed a quality and product safety culture and mindset,” adds Niels.

WARNING: This post is not for people with a fear of heights! 😆 At Chr. Hansen, we have a proud culture of strong colleagueship – so strong that it goes beyond organizational borders and working hours. Most recently, this was demonstrated when 20 Hansenites from across the sites in Denmark joined forces to reach the top of Mount Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa, earlier this month. Always aiming high, our colleagues climbed the 4,167 meters in three days, supported by a team of four local guides ensuring no one got lost in the mountains 🌍 "It was a fantastic trip! We got to experience nature on a whole other level and felt a strong togetherness, where people helped each other with equipment and encouragement when needed," said Per Poulsen, who, together with Casper Lynghoej Giedo, planned and arranged the trip. This adrenaline-packed activity is an excellent example of the many social employee clubs that thrive at Chr. Hansen. It was organized by an internal group focusing on adventure, aka 'Adventure Club Denmark.'
