Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding: Innovation Capability
Deploying scientific research according to the market requirement, we formed the research and development situation, which is “research and develop a generation, design a generation, product a generation, conceive a generation”.
In recent years, we have taken charge of more than 50 scientific research items, which come from State Development and Reform Commission,Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence, Shanghai Municipal Government and China State Shipbuilding Corporation(CSSC) etc. We have built series of products, including Bulk Carriers, Oiltanks, VLCCs, FPSOs, Drilling Platforms. The holding orders and annual shipbuilding capacity of SWS reached the fourth position in the world in 2007. Depending on its holding orders and annual shipbuilding capacity, SWS becomes the only shipyard in China which entered the top ten powerful shipyards in the world.
Among those, 175,000 DWT Capesize Bulk Carriers have formed a series of products, which was awarded as the Second Prize of Shanghai Scientific and Technological Progress in 2004 and the First Prize of CSSC Scientific and Technological Progress, and been listed in the plan of state priority new products. The shipbuilding orders of this type of vessel, which was honored as “Shanghai Celebrated Brand” and “China Top Ten Ship”, has been more than 120. The company was known as “the World's Capesize Bulk Carrier Construction center”. 150,000 DWT FPSO was awarded as the Third Prize of Shanghai Scientific and Technological Progress in 2005 and the First Prize of CSSC Scientific and Technological Progress, based on which 170,000 DWT FPSO and 300,000 DWT FPSO were researched and developed. 300,000 DWT FPSO is the most advanced offshore engineering project with the largest tonnage and the highest cost undertaken by China up to now. 105,000 DWT Aframax Crude Oil Tanker obtained the title of "China Celebrated Brand Product". 318,000 DWT VLCC is the first type of largest green environment-friendly VLCC, which can fully comply with the terms of Common Structure Rules(CSR). 3000 Meters Deep Water Semi-Submersible Drilling Platform is sixth-generation semi-submersible drilling platform which is the most advanced in the world.
In the research of new production technology, we effectively promoted the production efficiency, shortened the dry dock cycle and further improved the production design by the courageous innovation and the deepened application. The new production technologies, such as to improve the integrity of block-outfitting, to speed up the block assembly, to enlarge the scope of pre-outfitting and unit outfitting and to improve the utilization of dry dock, have been comprehensively popularized and carried out in actual production.
On the basis of fully absorbing the concept of modern shipbuilding,we continuously improved our existing management system, and have successfully developed the system of enterprise management (SEM) by applying the modern information technology. In the construction of informationization,taking “Perfect Production and Fine Management” as the principle,we have been optimizing the main shipbuilding processes and production methods,and have set up the corresponding system for business management and control to improve the staff’s understanding of “Perfect Shipbuilding”. We have increased the production efficiency and reduced the production costs.

Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (SWS) was founded in 1999, which is a full-invested subsidiary company of a listed company---China CSSC Holdings Ltd. (Stock Code: 600150). SWS covers a total area of 5 million square meters, of which the annual shipbuilding capacity is over 7 million deadweight tonnage. SWS has become the No. 1 Shipyard in China, of which both the annual shipbuilding capacity and economic benefit have continuously reached the top place among the domestic shipbuilding enterprises in the recent years.
