Stena Recycling is significantly investing in electric vehicle battery management, having allocated over SEK 500 million. With a shift toward battery reuse, the company aims to capitalize on a projected SEK 260 billion market, enhancing its competitive edge in Europe.
The Stena Metall Group achieved a strong EBITDA of SEK 2,530 million for 2022/2023, investing in lithium-ion battery recycling facilities and sustainability initiatives. CEO Kristofer Sundsgård emphasized maintaining competitiveness through cost efficiency and strategic investments despite challenging market conditions.
On November 17, Stena Metall, together with the Danish company Vestforbrænding, inaugurated the world's first full-scale HaloSep plant. The plant converts fly ash from incineration processes into useful resources such as metals and salt, as well as purified fly ash. The ash is today classified as a hazardous waste that may only be disposed of in special landfills.
Stena is now taking the next step in shipping electrification: the development of a new type of energy storage, similar to very large powerbanks, which will be essential for the quick charging of electric ferries in the future. The project is part-financed by the EU and will, among other things, investigate how used batteries from the transport sector can be reused for energy storage in ports.
The commercial service lives of bus batteries are significantly extended and natural resources are conserved. That is the result of a new cooperation between Volvo Buses and Stena Recycling subsidiary Batteryloop. After the batteries are removed from Volvo's buses, they are reused as energy storage units for a number of years, for instance in buildings and charging stations.
Stena Aluminium has been named “Best Supplier of the Year 2018” by Gnutti Carlo Light Metal Division. Gnutti Carlo Light Metal Division is the owner of the aluminium foundry Ljunghäll in Sweden and also has foundries in China and the Czech Republic. Soon they will also open a foundry in Canada.
The Stena Metall Group's financial year is reported in the 2017/18 annual report, as well as the annual review and sustainability report.
There was no mistaking the party atmosphere at the inauguration of the Stena Nordic Recycling Center, the Stena Metall Group's largest industrial investment, on October 26. The event was a great success, with around 450 guests getting to experience our state-of-the-art recycling facility, including the 95 percent recycling rate we achieve for end-of-life vehicles.
October 26 will be the grand opening of Stena Nordic Recycling Center in Halmstad. A recycling facility the size of 80 soccer pitches with modern and efficient processes, making it possible to recycle more material, primarily metals, in a sustainable way from industry, households and society in general.
