Mental health first aid at ComeOn Group

In light of Mental Health Awareness this month we’d like to shed some light over how we support our employees when things can get a bit challenging. One way we do that is training our volunteering employees in mental health first aid. Kyle Ginn-Hudson, one of our trained Mental Health First Aiders, said: “When we started off with the initiative, mental health first aid training was still a fairly new concept, unlike traditional first aid. The training emphasises approaching mental health issues, helping those in crisis, and recognising signs of crisis effectively.

In many cases, individuals may not openly admit when they are struggling. It is crucial to be observant and recognise signs of distress in others alongside prioritising confidentiality and approach the situation with sensitivity to avoid increasing their vulnerability. Taking the person to a neutral location, like grabbing a coffee or changing the setting, can create a more personal and supportive atmosphere. By focusing on the individual rather than the circumstances, we can better address mental health concerns and foster a supportive environment, instead of merely displaying posters. It is essential to take proactive steps to support each other and cultivate a culture of mutual care. Active listening, empathy, and building trust are crucial in supporting team members through difficult situations. Creating a safe space for open communication enables individuals to share their struggles without fear of judgement. By intervening early and offering support before a crisis, we also help individuals manage their emotions effectively. Authentic conversations showing genuine care, rather than just following HR protocols, are vital. Providing proactive support can prevent situations from escalating, fostering a more supportive work environment where individuals feel comfortable seeking help when needed.”

Kyle also mentioned that our mental health first aid training has made a positive impact and the company's decision to enhance the employee assistance program by involving organisations like the Richmond Foundation, has been well received. Referring individuals to available services, such as those provided by the Richmond Foundation, shows a commitment to supporting employees in times of need. Knowing that support services are accessible can provide peace of mind, ensuring help is available when required without the financial burden. Spreading awareness about mental health first aiders and promoting the use of mental health sick days can further support employees' well-being. On top of our mental health benefits we also offer flexibility with 40 days of working from another location that allows employees to visit family or just get a change of scenery, something that also adds to the balance between work and life. Providing employees with this opportunity, demonstrates a compassionate approach that values well-being above all else - which is what we are all about here at ComeOn Group!”
