Consat Telematics introduces Yard Management
As public transportation becomes increasingly complex, efficient depot operations are more important than ever. Consat Telematics is introducing Yard Management, a new offering designed to help public transportation operators improve vehicle readiness, streamline depot activities and keep daily operations running smoothly. The solution is being officially introduced at Persontrafik 2026 in Stockholm, Sweden, on 20 October.
Every day, buses return to depots where they must be prepared for their next assignment. Vehicles need to be parked, charged, cleaned, maintained and ready to depart on schedule. With growing electric fleets and increasingly complex operations, coordinating these activities presents new challenges for public transport operators.
Yet much of the information needed to manage these processes is often spread across different systems, teams and manual routines.
"Reliable public transportation starts long before the first departure. As fleets become more complex, operators need better ways to coordinate everything happening behind the scenes. With Yard Management, we're connecting the depot with the wider transport operation, helping operators work more efficiently and make better-informed decisions," says Pär Thuresson, CEO at Consat Telematics.
From fragmented information to a complete operational picture
Consat Telematics Yard Management brings together information about vehicle location, operational status, charging, maintenance needs and parking assignments into one shared operational picture.
Instead of relying on manual checks and communication between different teams, operators gain a clearer understanding of where vehicles are, whether they are ready for service and what needs attention before the next departure.
The solution supports depot coordinators, yard staff, planners, workshop teams and drivers, providing each role with the information relevant to their responsibilities.
Identifying problems before they affect service
A vehicle may be physically present in the depot but still not be ready for its next assignment. It might have insufficient charge, an unresolved fault or be parked in a location that makes departure difficult.
By bringing this information together, Yard Management helps operational teams identify potential issues earlier and take corrective action while there is still time.
The offering includes vehicle positioning, readiness monitoring, parking assignment and driver guidance, alongside visibility into vehicle faults, charging status and other operational conditions.
"One of the biggest challenges in depot operations isn't necessarily a lack of information. It's that the information is spread across different systems and teams. Yard Management brings it together, making it easier to identify what needs attention, coordinate activities and ensure the right vehicles are ready when they're needed," says Amir Skangic, Chief Product Owner at Consat Telematics.
Developed with real operational needs in mind
The development of Yard Management has also involved practical evaluation of the solution in a real operational environment.
As part of a proof of concept with a Canadian public transport operator, Consat Telematics has explored how parking positioning can improve visibility and support more efficient depot operations.
The work provides valuable insights into the everyday challenges faced by operators and helps inform the continued development of the offering.
Connecting the depot with the wider transport operation
Yard Management is part of Consat Telematics' broader intelligent public transportation solution, connecting depot activities with information from vehicles, fleet management and traffic operations.
As the industry continues its transition towards electrification and increasingly automated operations, this integrated approach becomes even more important.
With broader market availability anticipated during the first half of 2027, Yard Management represents another step in Consat Telematics' ongoing efforts to support more connected, efficient and intelligent public transportation operations.
By connecting information across different parts of the operation, transport providers can make better-informed decisions, coordinate resources more effectively and create a stronger foundation for future developments in depot management.
