Ukraine: Danish-Ukrainian workshop states options to increase use of renewable energy in heating sector

The Ukrainian-Danish cooperation is working towards an increased use of renewable energy. Ukrainian institutions participated in a successful workshop hosted by the Danish Energy Agency contributing to the target of renewable energy in the heating sector.

UDEC - DEA Coordination meeting

The bilateral energy cooperation between Denmark and Ukraine rests in the Ukrainian Danish Energy Centre (UDEC), which is placed in the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry in Kiev. The workshop on the 15th-17th of August focused on analysing the options for increased use of renewable energy in the heating sector. The workshop was based on activities under the UDEC Working Group on district heating.

Besides UDEC, the State Agency for Energy Efficiency and Energy Savings (SAEE) and the Danish Energy Agency (DEA) participated in the workshop. The workshop was conducted through presentations on biomass data heat planning, biomass, biogas and municipal waste, through site visits along with drafting the terms of reference for the forthcoming analysis of the options of renewable energy in the heating sector.

Main focus was on heating systems in Ukraine with a potential for using biomass, biogas and municipal waste for heat generation.

Site visits at Helsingør Kraftvarmeværk and Samsø Energiakademi proved successful use of renewable energy in the heating sector, which contributed to understanding options within e.g. biomass.

The energy cooperation between Ukraine and Denmark aims to ensure improved data for energy supply and consumption in order to enable Ukraine to create a long-term framework for energy planning and policy. The cooperation covers technical support to the Ukrainian governmental administration within the six main topics:

1. Methodology of long term forecast modelling for national energy balance.
2. Methodology for greenhouse gas registry and UNFCCC reporting.
3. Methodology for monitoring energy efficiency at industrial sub-sector level.
4. Methodology and tools for analysis of integrating renewable energy in regional grids.
5. Methodology and software for energy scenario analyses.
6. Analysis of options for increased use of biomass and biogas in the heat sector.

The workshop primarily addressed the sixth topic.
