China: Long term scenarios for renewable energy in China

The first step in China National Renewable Energy Centre’s “Boosting Renewable Energy” programme was taken from 9-13 February in Beijing, as the Centre prepares to give input on renewable energy to the 13th Chinese Five-Year Plan.

From 9 -13 February the first series of joint working séances in the CNREC programme ‘Boosting Renewable Energy’ took place in Beijing. The participants included specialists from the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), China National Renewable Energy Centre (CNREC), Energinet.dk, EA Energianalyse and the Danish Energy Agency (DEA).

The specialists discussed the forthcoming work related to ‘Long Term Scenarios and Energy system modelling for China’. During a number a working séances the participants discussed the provision of data, agreed on assumptions and tools to develop long term scenarios for China’s renewable energy future.

These scenarios will provide a refinement and improvement of the already developed 2050 Scenarios for China by CNREC. It is expected that the first set of revised 2050-scenarios with focus on renewable energy will be finished by mid-2015. The medium-term development will be analysed, which will be an important contribution to the inputs for the 13th Five-Year Pan from 2016 to 2020 that the National Energy Administration (NEA) has asked CNREC to provide in 2015. The 2050 Scenarios will also be published by CNREC during the course of 2015-16
