The workshop was hosted by Mexico’s National Commission for Efficient Use of Energy (CONUEE) and Mr Odón de Buen, Director General of CONUEE welcomed participants from the Mexican Ministry of Energy (SENER), CONUEE and the Danish Energy Agency (DEA) to the workshop. The purpose of the workshop was to provide a forum for energy efficiency experts involved in development and implementation of energy efficiency policies to clarify the specific areas of common interest for future cooperation within the field of energy efficiency in buildings and industry. Energy efficiency is one of the three components of the Danish-Mexican Climate and Energy programme, which will run to mid-2017.

As a basis for discussions on Danish input through the cooperation program experts from DEA’s Low Carbon Transition Unit (LCTU) gave a number of presentations. Ulla Vestergaard Rasmussen gave a brief presentation on Energy Efficiency in Denmark, which was followed up by a presentation on Energy Efficiency in New Buildings by Jesper Ditlefsen, Energy Management in Industry by Peter Maagøe Petersen and Insurance for Energy Savings – Piloting in Mexico? by Nikolaj Lomholt Svensson.

Experts from SENER and CONUEE informed about Mexican energy efficiency policies and programs and areas of interest, e.g. PRONASE 2014-2018, where Danish experience and expertise could be utilized through the Climate and Energy programme.  Options for implementation of energy efficiency standards in new buildings and voluntary agreement schemes addressing energy intensive industries were discussed more in depth.

Discussions during the workshop on energy efficiency showed great opportunities for benefits for the program stakeholders through the Climate and Energy Programme. It was agreed to continue the close dialogue between on Danish and Mexican program partners in order to prepare a detailed work program on the energy efficiency component. One activity to be included in program is a study tour to Denmark for energy efficiency experts from SENER and CONUEE.
