2 sustainable agricultural solutions you might not know

The climate crisis continues its relevancy. Throughout the years, focus on the issue has intensified further as droughts, forest fires and famine increase in large parts of the world.

But all is not lost - for every climate problem, dozens of solutions are being developed to solve these problems.

In the agricultural space as well, experts are finding creative ways to do things differently. Here are two creative ideas to how experts want to minimize the impact which traditional agriculture is affecting global warming.

Aquaponics farming

This solution is a way to grow plants without the use of soil. Instead, fish are the most important component keeping the plants alive.

The solution works by placing the plants in a grow bed above a water tank containing fish. The natural waste from the fish is fed to the plants by applying it to the grow bed from which the plants benefit. In return, the plants clean and filter the water in the tank.

The benefits are a soil-free solutions in which plants grow from natural fish waste using much less water than otherwise needed in traditional farming.

Urban rooftop farming

As the term implies, this solution involves farming on rooftops in urban areas instead of farming on massive areas of farmland far from great amounts of the population.

This solution is beneficial on two fronts. The first one is the ability to outsource farming from farmland to urban areas and thereby create hyper-locally grown foods which can be picked based on their flavors and not their ability to survive world-wide transportation.

The second benefit is mitigating the phenomenon known as “urban heat islands” where urban cities have no natural, trees as an example, protection to shield itself against the increasing heat from global warming.

Applying sustainable ideals to the creation of urban rooftop farming systems create the benefits of less emission from transportation vehicles, pesticide-free grown crops and natural heat protection of areas of the inner city.
