Strong Pace but No Finish: Frederik Schandorff Retires at Laguna Seca

Disappointing IMSA weekend for the Danish Ferrari driver, who was forced to retire from the Laguna Seca race due to technical issues – now turning focus to Spa test with British McLaren team.

Hopes of scoring valuable points in the coveted Bob Akin Award standings were dashed for Frederik Schandorff and Brendan Iribe, who failed to finish this weekend’s IMSA race at Laguna Seca. The duo was forced to retire from a race that, according to the Dane, had promising potential for a strong result.

"We had good pace and were the fastest of the bronze-rated cars we’re competing against in the Bob Akin Championship. Brendan (Iribe, ed.) got the race off to a solid start, but near the end of my first stint I began to lose power, and we decided to bring the car back to the garage and retire from the race. Unfortunately, we missed out on a lot of important points, and now we need to analyze exactly what the issue was and why it happened," said Frederik Schandorff.

Schandorff is already busy at Spa-Francorchamps, where a last-minute call has placed him on the entry list for the official test ahead of the Belgian 24-hour race at the end of June. The Dane will test with the British McLaren outfit, Garage 59.

"I’ve done quite a few races in McLaren’s GT3 car, including the 24 Hours of Spa with Inception Racing, but we’ll see what happens. It’s a fantastic race, and of course I’d love to be a part of it," said Schandorff.

The official prologue for the 24 Hours of Spa takes place on Tuesday, May 13, and Wednesday, May 14. The world-famous endurance classic, which is exclusively reserved for GT cars, will be held on June 28–29.
