Lorena Wiebes wins the Copenhagen Sprint again
Dutch sprinter Lorena Wiebes was once again the fastest as the Copenhagen Sprint was decided in a sprint finish in front of the National Gallery of Denmark. The SD Worx-Protime rider relegated Charlotte Kool and Nienke Veenhoven to the remaining podium places, whilst Amalie Dideriksen was the top Danish finisher in 8th place.
Just like last year, Lorena Wiebes of SD Worx-Protime was unbeatable in the sprint as the second edition of the Copenhagen Sprint was decided on Saturday in a showdown between the fastest sprinters on Sølvgade in front of the National Gallery of Denmark.
The Dutch rider relegated Charlotte Kool of Fenix-Premier Tech to second place and Nienke Veenhoven of Team Visma Lease a Bike to third. During the day, three Danish riders were part of the breakaway, which was essentially in the lead all the way into Copenhagen, and at the finish line, former world champion Amalie Dideriksen was the best-placed Dane in 8th place.
The 27-year-old Dutch winner was delighted to repeat last year’s triumph and she highlighted the team’s efforts – both out on the route and on the circuit in the heart of Copenhagen:
"I'm really happy to have won again. The team worked hard, which is an extra motivation, and on the circuit the team did a great job of keeping me right at the front the whole way," says Lorena Wiebes, who hopes to return next year and complete a hat-trick.
"Of course, I hope I can come back next year and complete a hat-trick. I like Denmark, and I have lots of good memories here – not just the two victories here in Copenhagen, but I also became junior world champion here in Denmark."
This is Lorena Wiebe’s 11th victory in this race and the 127th of her career.
The 156-kilometre race started in Roskilde and wound its way through North Zealand via Frederikssund, Hillerød, Farum, Hillerød and Ballerup, before the peloton reached the circuit in Copenhagen after approximately 125 kilometres.
The race was characterised by a breakaway of seven riders, including the three Danes Solbjørk Minke Anderson, EF Education-Oatly, and Ida Krickau Ketelsen, O'Shea Red Chilli Bikes. The breakaway managed to build a lead of 1.40, but before the circuit in Copenhagen, the breakaway riders were caught. The best attempt to outwit the sprinters came from national team rider Silje Antvorskov, but ultimately the strongest sprint teams were in control, so the first edition of the World Tour race was decided in a sprint, and here Lorena Wiebes was simply superb.
On Sunday, the men’s Copenhagen Sprint takes place, with Tobias Lund Andresen the best hope for a top Danish finish.
