22-009-SO Alert Note Drought in Kenya

Seniors Without Borders has submitted an alert regarding drought in DolDol area, Mukogodo Location, Laikipia North Sub County in Kenya.

Climate change has caused prolonged and irregular droughts followed by degradation of the natural environment. This has caused death to almost all the livestock, hence leaving the local community with no means of getting food, since they are entirely pastoralists, solely depending on livestock as a source of livelihood.

Since mid of April 2021, there has been no sufficient rains. As a matter of fact, in the months of January through March 2022 there has not been even a drop of rain. Few days ago, the area received very minimal rain and it stopped again leaving no impact.

More than 5000 people are affected within the DolDol area. The most affected group is the Yaaku community which is a minority group, living in the Mukogodo forest near DolDol. Urgent food donations are needed to save this community from a hunger crisis.
