Alert Note: Flood Crisis in Sudan and South Sudan

The rainy season in Sudan typically begins in June and lasts until September, with peak rainfall and flooding occurring between September and October. The Red Sea, White Nile, North Darfur, and Northern states have been among the worst affected, while severe flooding has also been reported across six other states. In South Sudan, Jonglei and Unity states account for over 91% of the total impact following the overflow of the River Nile on October 8th. Hundreds of people in both Sudan and South Sudan have been displaced, with homes and infrastructure destroyed and vast areas of farmland inundated, resulting in widespread crop losses. In Sudan, an estimated 696,683 people have been affected by floods, including 186,765 displaced persons. In South Sudan, 886,106 people have been affected, including 287,300 displaced persons. Around half of the population in both countries (32,3million people) is currently facing high levels of acute food insecurity. Flood-affected populations are in urgent need of nutrition, health, water, sanitation, and shelter support. In both countries, health risks are escalating due to stagnant floodwaters, with rising cases of malaria, respiratory infections, and diarrhea further worsening the already dire humanitarian situation in Sudan and South Sudan.
