HUAWEI WATCH D2 smartwatch brings 24/7 blood pressure monitoring to wearable technology

Huawei’s all-new HUAWEI WATCH D2 smartwatch, launched in September, is now coming to Denmark. It is a medically certified next-generation wrist-worn ambulatory blood pressure monitor (ABPM), [1] and represents a significant step forward in wearable technology and demonstrates Huawei’s commitment to Health Forward.

The Huawei Watch D2's blood pressure monitoring measurement feature and ECG app are CE-marked medical devices. The watch utilizes the new HUAWEI TruSense system, which ensures fast and accurate measurement results. The watch is widely compatible with iOS and Android devices, making health features accessible to more users.

The future of health monitoring on your wrist

Everyday things, such as work, stress, lifestyle and eating habits, can affect blood pressure. However, by monitoring blood pressure, potential risks of high blood pressure can be identified early. According to Finnish specialist Pippa Laukka, regular blood pressure measurement is recommended for all adults.

“Monitoring your blood pressure is important because blood pressure can rise without you noticing, and high blood pressure, or hypertension, is often asymptomatic. However, it can lead to serious complications, such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, kidney failure, and heart failure. Early detection and monitoring can help prevent these complications.”

Key hypertension treatment guidelines, such as the ISH (2020) Global Hypertension Practice Guidelines, the ACC/AHA (2017) Blood Pressure Guideline, and the ESC/ESH (2018) Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Arterial Hypertension, recommend ambulatory blood pressure monitoring as one of three blood pressure measurement methods for diagnosing hypertension. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) is also considered the standard for monitoring and treating hypertension symptoms.

Understanding the importance of effective health management and the high cost and usability challenges of traditional ABPM devices, Huawei has established long-term partnerships with hypertension experts worldwide, including George S. Stergiou , the incoming president of the International Society of Hypertension, and Professor Wang Jiguang , the chairman of the Chinese Hypertension League . Huawei has also invested in blood pressure technology research for over a decade, and has made significant technological advances in the past three years.

HUAWEI WATCH D2 smartwatch offers 24-hour blood pressure monitoring

HUAWEI WATCH D2 brings continuous, 24-hour blood pressure monitoring directly to the user's wrist. The device has an air bag that inflates and measures blood pressure at regular intervals throughout the day and at night while you sleep. The watch reports the measurement results via notifications. The smartwatch allows measurements in different positions, such as standing, sitting or semi-reclining, and performs night measurements automatically.

“Measuring blood pressure is a natural part of taking care of yourself, and measuring with this watch is easy, fast and reliable. The measurement doesn't take long, but it also provides a moment of pause and natural recovery, which many people need in the hustle and bustle of everyday life,” Pippa Laukka enthuses.

The world's first ABPM certified and NMPA and MDR approved smartwatch

HUAWEI WATCH D2 is the world's first wrist-worn ambulatory blood pressure monitor [2] approved by NMPA and MDR. The smartwatch was developed in close collaboration with internationally renowned experts.

Blood pressure measurement is enabled by the HUAWEI TruSense system, developed through over a decade of research. The HUAWEI WATCH D2 smartwatch features a precision pressure sensor, mini pump and inflatable air bag, enabling accurate and uninterrupted blood pressure measurement.

HUAWEI WATCH D2 measures heart rate beat-by-beat through ECG analysis [3] , oxygen saturation or SpO2 [4] , heart rate [5] , stress level [6] and skin temperature [7] , providing comprehensive health management right on the wearer's wrist and helping to detect potential health risks.

With a single touch, users can measure nine body indicators and generate a health report [8] , which helps identify potential health risks. Measurements include heart rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen level (SpO2), stress, skin temperature, ECG, vascular elasticity, respiration and sleep awareness. The HUAWEI WATCH D2 is also Huawei’s first smartwatch to offer a blood pressure analysis function in the health report. According to Pippa Laukka, comprehensive health monitoring can bring surprising but important insights to users.

“It may come as a surprise to many how much a smartwatch can impact health monitoring through other features such as heart rate, recovery, sleep tracking, and step counting. This holistic approach can add a lot of value to personal health management.”

The watch features over 80 workout modes [9] and daily tracking of exercise, diet, sleep, weight and stress, helping users adopt a healthy lifestyle and effectively supporting blood pressure management.

Lightweight and simple design: “Huawei Watch D2 makes measuring easy”

The compact and lightweight [10] design of the HUAWEI WATCH D2 smartwatch makes it comfortable to wear and allows for regular blood pressure monitoring.

“Huawei Watch D2 makes measuring easy, as it is conveniently portable and works like a traditional upper arm cuff. The watch is easy to use and thin and fits well on the wrist,” says Pippa Laukka.

The watch features a 1.82-inch display, a new colorful user interface, and a stylish 2.5D design. The device is only about one-fifth the width of traditional upper arm models, has 1/25 the volume, and 1/26 the weight of their counterparts. An ultra-narrow air bag, just 26.5 mm wide [11], increases wearing comfort.

The watch is available in two colors: black and gold. The user can choose between a black fluoroelastomer strap with a sweat-resistant and skin-friendly soft TPU rubber coating or an elegant cream-colored leather strap.
