These are the changes travellers want to see when travelling with checked baggage

  • The international travel network InsideFlyer, in collaboration with BAGTAG, has surveyed travellers throughout Europe on the extent to which they travel with checked or carry-on baggage only.
  • The survey shows what travellers find annoying when travelling with checked baggage and what customer-oriented solutions they would like to see from the airlines.

Copenhagen, September 21st - 2020: The international travel network InsideFlyer has published the results of a survey which measures the opinions of travellers regarding flights with checked baggage. The survey, with almost 1,500 participants, presents passengers' concerns about checked baggage versus carry-on baggage, and outlines passengers' wishes on how airlines can make travelling with checked baggage more pleasant.

The big problem: waiting time

More than half of the travellers surveyed make between six and 30 air trips a year, 12 per cent of those surveyed even more. Only 38 per cent stated that they would take these flights with checked baggage. The reason for the reluctance to check in suitcases is easy to summarise: The waiting time, be it at the check-in counter or at the baggage carousel. Particularly in view of the fact that 66 percent of the participants can use the priority check-in for their flights, it is clear that there is considerable potential for improvement in handling the situation. Added to this is the concern about whether baggage actually arrives at its destination at the same time as you do, as well as the fact that checked-in baggage costs extra with most airlines.

Travelling with checked-in luggage is still pleasant

Nevertheless, the participants clearly state that travelling by air is quite pleasant without a hand luggage suitcase, but with checked-in luggage. They particularly emphasise that boarding, disembarking from the aircraft at the destination and security checks are less complicated.

Passengers want transparency and time savings

The survey shows that passengers want a transparent information policy throughout. The most popular way to overcome concerns or frustration about travelling with checked baggage is to have real-time information about the status of checked baggage available on the smartphone. This allows passengers to see if their baggage has already been loaded at the departure airport. On arrival, respondents would like to see whether the suitcase has already been unloaded and is on its way to the baggage carousel or is still on the plane.

In addition, the respondents would be willing to attach a digital luggage tag to their suitcase at home, if this would enable them to avoid the queues and waiting time at the airport. Another option for respondents is to add priority services such as priority check-in or priority baggage claim during the booking process.

Two thirds of respondents are willing to pay extra

While 32 per cent of the participants stated that they are not prepared to pay more for a more pleasant journey with checked baggage, the rest see things differently. So they would be willing to spend the following amounts extra per flight if it would give them a more stress-free travel experience:

  • 1€ - 5€: 12 percent
  • 6€ - 10€: 17 percent
  • 11€ - 20€: 18 percent
  • 21€ - 30€: 10 percent
  • 30€+: 7 percent
