Kunsthal Charlottenborg announces its exhibition program for the new year, featuring internationally recognized artists such as Thao Nguyen Phan, Simon Dybbroe Møller, Francis Upritchard, a large-scale exhibition on artificial intelligence as well as a large number of talents and established stars from the Nordic countries and abroad.

Over the coming year, Kunsthal Charlottenborg will present three solo exhibitions, each of which illuminates highly topical subjects through a wide range of works, including captivating film installations, meticulously executed lacquer paintings, delicate watercolours, architectural interventions, decorated ceramics, colourful masks, blown glass vases and figurative sculptures. The annual major themed exhibition at Kunsthal Charlottenborg will in 2024 offer new perspectives on the relationship between art and artificial intelligence with a number of renowned international artists.

Kunsthal Charlottenborg's director Michael Thouber says:

"In 2024, we will show emerging and significant artists from around the world. Several of the exhibitions are created in collaboration with some of the art institutions abroad that we respect the most, such as Pirelli HangarBicocca in Milan and KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin. These collaborations give us the opportunity to show some of the most acclaimed artists of the time. At the same time, it is more sustainable to show the artists at several European institutions when we ship their works from all over the world to our continent.”

Next year, the audience can also look forward to revisiting Charlottenborg Live, which offers a whole new series of live talks, performances and tours every month.

Kunsthal Charlottenborg's exhibitions in 2024 are generously supported by the 15 June Foundation, the Augustinus Foundation, the Axel Muusfeldt Foundation, the Beckett Foundation, the Bikuben Foundation, the Danish Art Foundation, the Dreyers Foundation, the Knud Højgaard’s Foundation, the Konsul George Jorck and Wife Emma Jorck's Foundation, the New Carlsberg Foundation, the Obel Family Foundation, the William Demant Foundation.

Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition 2024
2 Feb – 3 Mar 2024

The Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition is an excellent opportunity to explore art talents from the Nordic region and elsewhere in the world. With a long legacy dating all the way back to 1857, this annual exhibition is one of the most important open-call, juried exhibitions in Europe and continues to attract plenty of visitors.

Each year, a professional jury selects from a wide range of different artists who have responded to the open call. The open format creates opportunities for discovering new artists and being introduced to different modes of artistic expression. The Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition acts as a barometer for the present state of contemporary art, reflecting current trends within the art world. With works ranging from painting and sculpture to video installations and performance art, the exhibition lets visitors explore and appreciate the rich diversity of contemporary art.

In 2024, the jury comprises: artist Aske Olsen; artist J.G. Arvidsson; architecture student, curator and artist Aysha Amin; and the Laboratory for Aesthetics and Ecology represented by Ida Bencke, Dea Antonsen and Laura Gerdes-Miranda.

Thao Nguyen Phan
Reincarnations of Shadows
13 Mar – 11 Aug 2024

Visual artist Thao Nguyen Phan (b. 1987) intertwines mythology and folklore from her homeland’s turbulent past with current pressing issues of excessive consumption and the destruction of the earth’s resources. The intersection between the documentary and the supernatural take centre stage in this exhibition, which evokes ghostly presences, lush landscapes and unofficial narratives.

Thao Nguyen Phan's spiritual moving image works revolve around the interaction between people, architecture and nature in Vietnam and the broader Mekong region, which has been plagued by natural as well as manmade tragedies throughout history and still to this day is characterized by the legacy of colonialism, ongoing industrialization and increasing climate change.

Reincarnations of Shadows introduces a deep layering of audio, visual and tactile references. Through more than 100 works from the past 10 years, the exhibition will unfold the artist’s captivating imagery through poetic film installations, meticulously executed lacquer paintings, light sculptures, delicate watercolours and architectural interventions.

The exhibition is curated by Henriette Bretton-Meyer, presented in collaboration with CPH:DOX and organised by Pirelli HangarBicocca in Milan in collaboration with Kunsthal Charlottenborg. Further info here.

Simon Dybbroe Møller
8 Jun – 11 Aug 2024

He has brought the bog body known as the Grauballe Man back to life, created a work featuring the Danish poet Peter Laugesen dangling from a forklift, and directed a cinematic trilogy inspired by Richard Scarry’s children’s books about the busy, busy world of work.

In the summer of 2024, Kunsthal Charlottenborg presents a survey of work by Danish artist Simon Dybbroe Møller (b. 1976), who is a professor at the School of Sculpture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Spanning from mid-2000’s till the present, the exhibition will be the most comprehensive presentation of Dybbroe Møller’s practice to date. The artist will additionally be producing a number of new works as well as reconfigure older ones.

Dybbroe Møller is concerned with the construction of an image, in which notions of documentation and representation are continuously challenged and reshaped. In a conceptual fashion, the artist dissects our understanding of photography or rather the photographic through an exploration on perception and memory. Rather than settling into one medium or style, Dybbroe Møller continuously probes new territories in which he seamlessly moves between film, photography, found objects, installation, sculpture, performance, writing, curating and teaching.

The exhibition is curated by the director of the KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin, Krist Gruijthuijsen, in close collaboration with the artist. Further info here.

Francis Upritchard
The Waste
28 Sep 2024 – 16 Feb 2025

In the autumn, Kunsthal Charlottenborg presents a solo exhibition with the New Zealand visual artist Francis Upritchard (b. 1976). Her works occupies a field where visual art, design and craft intersect and can take on many different formats, ranging from large-scale figurative sculptures to decorated ceramics, delicate watercolours, colourful masks and blown glass vases.

Francis Upritchard creates her works with a clear enthusiasm for both science fiction and prehistoric finds, and several of her modeled sculptures embody mythical figures such as the centaur, the dinosaur and the mermaid. At Kunsthal Charlottenborg, these beings will be accompanied by a group of eccentric figures and a large collection of the artist's miniature works, which together examine what a sculpture can really be.

The exhibition's fantastic creatures and colorful personalities escape established norms and unfold a kaleidoscopic narrative throughout the north wing of Kunsthal Charlottenborg, which offers the opportunity to contemplate different facets of the human condition.

The exhibition is curated by Henriette Bretton-Meyer. Further info here.

AI – Poetics of Encryption
28 Sep 2024 – 12 Jan 2025

This year’s major themed exhibition at Kunsthal Charlottenborg is featuring works by Danish and international artists, ranging across media and offering new perspectives on the relationship between art and artificial intelligence.

New technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), are often difficult to understand and the subject of much speculation. The exhibition explores the fascinating possibilities and concerns surrounding AI and other emerging tools. The featured artworks address the human image today—its limits and potential in an age of machine learning.

In the spring of 2023, more than 1,000 international scholars, scientists and business leaders signed a joint declaration urging a stop to the development of the major AI technologies. But what are they afraid of? And how do some of the leading artists of our time respond to the rapid development of artificial intelligence and its impact on contemporary art and society?

Through thought-provoking artworks, the exhibition AI – Poetics of Encryption will present an imaginary landscape containing artistic statements about intelligence, ignorance, information, power and life in the 21st century.

The exhibition is curated by Nadim Samman and initiated by KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin, with support by Volkswagen Group. AI – Poetics of Encryption will be shown in a new iteration at Kunsthal Charlottenborg. Further info here.
