See the full program for Art in a Day: 24 hours of performance art throughout Copenhagen
The full program for the first annual Art in a Day is ready. On June 24, a plethora of artistic performances will take place throughout Copenhagen. Renowned international artists, such as VALIE EXPORT, Peaches, Wu Tsang, and Martin Creed, are set to participate in this spectacular celebration of performance art.
Today, the full program for Art in a Day 2022 is revealed. Among the names added to the line-up are international artists VALIE EXPORT, Peaches, Baby Dee, and Martin Creed – joining previously announced artists such as Tosh Basco, Arvida Byström, Monster Chetwynd, and Henrik Vibskov.
The program kicks off on June 23 with two ambitious performances. First, Turner Prize winner Martin Creed presents his vast performance All the Bells in front of Kunstforeningen GL STRAND. In collaboration with churches and primary schools across Copenhagen, Creed will create a cacophonous work of sound art with church bells, children’s hollering, and the soundscape of the city. Subsequently, at midnight, the internationally acclaimed musician and artist Peaches will deliver an exclusive performance at Den Frie – Centre for Contemporary Art.
On the morning of 24 June, a marching band will set off on a parade through the streets of Copenhagen wearing costumes by visual artist and designer Henrik Vibskov, connecting the various performances by accompanying the audience from one place to the next. As Art in a Day spreads to carefully selected locations throughout the Danish capital, the public will get the opportunity to experience the city transform into an incredible stage for performance art, where collective participation is essential:
“Life is lived more and more on digital platforms. Therefore, it is more important than ever that we meet physically and experience things together. With Art in a Day, we want to create community-oriented performance experiences throughout Copenhagen that can inspire and initiate conversations,” says Simon Friese from Creator Projects, who has curated this year's program for Art in a Day in close collaboration with the six participating art halls.
The ambitious program is an extension of the six participating art halls' unique identities and histories, which, in conjunction with the city’s buzzing atmosphere, form the conceptual basis for Art in a Day. Additionally, the 24-hour event will showcase the participating artists' commitment to confront the issues of our time and reflect on themes such as gender fluidity, sexual orientation, poetry, power structures, and critiques of capitalism. The vision is to create an inclusive and welcoming environment with art as the natural gathering point:
“When performance art is taken out of the institutional framework and challenges time and place, many more will benefit from it. Art in a Day is driven by the desire to reach a larger audience through strengthened collaboration between Copenhagen's six art halls and thus make a positive and permanent mark on the art and cultural life,” says Helene Nyborg Bay, director of Nikolaj Kunsthal.
The various performances are choreographed as an alternative walking tour: Starting at Den Frie – Centre for Contemporary Art in Østerbro, moving through the city center with Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Nikolaj Kunsthal, and Kunstforeningen GL STRAND, by O – Overgaden in Christianshavn, to finally end up at Copenhagen Contemporary on Refshaleøen, where Art in a Day culminates with the official afterparty.
Art in a Day is a collaboration between the Copenhagen Contemporary, Den Frie – Centre for Contemporary Art, Kunstforeningen GL STRAND, Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Nikolaj Kunsthal and O – Overgaden.
