Dustin strikes a blow for a more circular IT industry

24 January is Circular Electronics Day, a day that aims to highlight the environmental benefits of extending the life of electronic products. Dustin, a leading online-based IT partner with operations in the Nordic region and the Netherlands, is one of the organisations behind the global initiative and wants to inspire a more circular IT industry.

“In a relatively short time, the IT industry can become more sustainable if investments are made in circular business models such as a longer service life for products and responsible waste management,” says Henrik Lampa, Head of Sustainability at Dustin.

Dustin has been investing in circular business models for several years. Through various leasing services and the offer of returns, Dustin has increased both the reuse and recycling of IT products. Over the past five years, Dustin has taken back over 200,000 end-of-life electronic products as a service. Of these products 90% could be reused. Dustin is currently16 per cent circular, and the goal is to have a fully circular offering by 2030.

Dustin’s customers are also showing increased awareness of and demand for circularity and the reuse of IT products. Henrik Lampa has the following tips for companies that want to make their IT more circular:

1.Returns. Most main products such as computers, monitors and mobile phones can be reused. Deleting data and refreshing the products gives them a second life.

2.Lease products. It is the use of IT equipment that creates value in the form of efficiency and profitability. Not ownership. Products that are leased from Dustin are then sent for reuse and recycling after the end of the leasing period.

3.Buy services. By purchasing various IT services, such as networks as a service, Dustin makes sure that the hardware is reused or recycled.

“These are all effective ways of saving both resources and climate. It takes 1.8 tonnes of raw material to produce a normal laptop, and for every time it is returned for reuse, we spare the earth hundreds of kilograms of carbon dioxide,” concludes Henrik Lampa.

As recently as September last year, Dustin launched a new sustainability strategy. The strategy is based on three global challenges facing the whole of society today: climate change, unsustainable resource consumption and social inequalities, and consists of three measurable goals, which state that by 2030 Dustin shall have:

  • 0 climate impact throughout the value chain.
  • a 100% circular offering.
  • taken 100 actions for social equality.
