Dustin well on the way to becoming circular

Dustin, a leading online IT partner in the Nordic region and the Netherlands, has already made good progress towards achieving its goal of a 100% circular offering by 2030. During the financial year 2019/20, Dustin reused almost 93% of all recovered products, while the remaining 7% was recycled. This can be seen in Dustin’s Annual and Corporate Responsibility Report, which has just been released.

Demand for sustainable IT solutions is on the rise, as the pace of the digital transformation increases. This means that adopting a stance and taking genuine action for a sustainable and circular future are also becoming increasingly important for customers from a commercial and risk perspective. Dustin has been investing in circular business models in its corporate responsibility work for several years, including the development of a range of products and services that encourage higher levels of recovery, reuse and recycling.

“As a first step in a transition to a circular IT industry, we set the target of recovering 140,000 products in 2014/15. A goal that seemed out of reach at that time. Now, five years on, we can confirm that we have comfortably exceeded our own expectations and recovered more than 200,000 products. 90% of these could be reused. Our recovery service, which was launched as part of our efforts to achieve a circular offering, is one strong contributory factor to our successes,” says Henrik Lampa, Head of Corporate Responsibility at Dustin.

“The journey’s only just begun”
Responsible resource utilisation is one of the five focus areas within the framework of Dustin’s corporate sustainability work, which has been prioritised over the past five years and at the same time supports the goals in Agenda 2030.

“In a circular economy, nothing goes to waste. Products, components and raw materials can be continuously managed, reused and continue to create value. Leasing and recycling to reuse products means that we can use our resources more efficiently, while at the same time reducing our carbon dioxide emissions. We’re now 16% circular. Within one year we’ll be up to 20%, and by 2030 our offering will be totally circular. The journey’s only just begun, and a lot will be required of us to achieve our goal,” says Henrik Lampa.

In order to achieve the ambitious goal, Dustin will continue to invest in circular business models, in which the reuse of hardware plays a very important role. During the year, Dustin has been using its recovery process to offer previously used products to bigger customers. The products recovered mainly comprise the categories of desktop computers, laptops, tablets, mobile phones, monitors, servers, network equipment and printers.

“Awareness of and demand for circularity, reuse and recycling of IT products among our customers has increased, and we can clearly see that expectations in terms of responsibility and transparency in an IT partner are higher than before. Customers are also making more specific demands in terms of sustainability in the public procurement of IT. Increased demand and clear environmental benefits encourage us to continue to increase the proportion of recovered products and to promote a totally circular customer offering,” concludes Henrik Lampa.

In addition to the goal of a 100% circular offering, Dustin also aims to be completely climate neutral throughout the entire value chain and to have taken a total of one hundred measures to further improve work on social equality by 2030.

Dustin reports its corporate responsibility results at the same level as the financial results, and they are audited by the company’s external auditors. You can read the full Annual and Corporate Responsibility Report for 2019/20 here.
