Utah Host Mom to Share Arts Education in The Gambia

Layton, UT May 23, 2024 - This June, Layton resident Tara Creed will embark on an inspiring journey to The Gambia in the Aiducatius Creativity Internship. From June 15 to 30, 2024, Creed, along with a small team of artistic interns, will work with over 1,000 students at St. Martin's Basic Cycle School in Kartong, introducing them to the joys of drawing and painting.

Tara Creed, a Local Coordinator and Host Mom for Educatius, a leading high school exchange organization, has been a champion of cultural exchange in Utah. She has facilitated heartwarming experiences for international students living with host families while attending local schools such as Davis School District, Morgan School District, and Layton Christian Academy. Creed’s passion for arts and crafts, combined with her dedication to education and international exchange, made her a winning candidate for this unique opportunity.

"I’m thrilled to join this internship and connect with the students and teachers in The Gambia through the shared language of art," said Creed. "While we’ll be introducing the students to new creative outlets like drawing and painting, I am equally excited to learn about their local traditions and culture."

Creed will be accompanied by Adam Gooder, an art teacher from Arlington High School in Massachusetts; Serena Pelizzari, a former exchange student from Italy; and Norun Igeltjørn-Brænd, a former exchange student from Norway. This diverse and talented group was selected for their artistic skills and experience in creating engaging activities for students.

"Cross-cultural exchange happens most authentically through shared experiences," explained Carla Kearns, Vice President of Communications for Educatius, who is coordinating the initiative. "Our interns will not only support the arts curriculum at St. Martin's School but will also immerse themselves in the vibrant Gambian culture."

In addition to leading art classes, the interns will train local teachers to sustainably incorporate drawing and painting into their regular lessons. Educatius also plans to create an online gallery to showcase the students’ artwork from the program, highlighting the creativity and talent of Gambian students.

The Aiducatius Creativity Internship is a testament to Educatius' commitment to providing access to quality education worldwide. Through Aiducatius, the organization proudly supports St. Martin's Basic Cycle School with annual funding for essential materials such as textbooks and uniforms.

Tara Creed’s upcoming journey illustrates the potential of community involvement and cultural exchange, demonstrating how local residents can make a global impact. Her story is an inspiration for those looking to foster positive change and cultivate arts education both at home and abroad.
