Press release -

EIT Health Scandinavia launches new Biobanks and Health Data Registries platform: Welcome to the Future of Health Data Management!

EIT Health Scandinavia, part of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union, proudly introduces the EIT Health Biobanks and Health Data Registries platform, a centralised hub connecting researchers, clinicians and industry professionals with European biobanks and health data registries.

The platform aims to provide easy access to and exchange of information about European biobanks and health data registries, crucial for advancing medical research and innovation.

To overcome barriers like unclear national legislation and lack of awareness, our Biobankshealthdata portal addresses the need for centralised access to biobank and registry information.

According to European Journal of Human Genetics, existing biobanks have reported less than 10% utilisation rate of their samples[1]and according to a worldwide study only 28% of biobanks have a formal business plan [2]. As an added advantage, further promoting the effective utilisation and sharing of biobank samples and data through our novel portal may also provide additional source of income to biobanks managers.

Developed in collaboration with the European biobanking research infrastructure (BBMRI-ERIC), the portal offers detailed profiles and search functionality to support research and innovation efforts. Biobanks and health data registries are welcome to make information about their services easily available for other companies and collaborators by adding them to the platform.

The portal aims to accelerate scientific breakthroughs, innovation and contribute to a healthier future by facilitating access to vital resources.

-With the EIT Health Biobanks and Health Data Registries Portal, not just connecting data; we are connecting minds, fostering collaboration, and propelling healthcare innovation forward, says Annika Szabo Portela, Managing Director, EIT Health Scandinavia

-At BBMRI-ERIC, we take pride in our collaboration with EIT Health Scandinavia to educate innovators on accessing our extensive network of biobanks throughout Europe, where existing sample and data collections are stored. These biobanks play a crucial role in advancing medical research and improving patient outcomes, says Saba Abdulghani, Head of Biobanking Development, BBMRI-ERIC

To support accelerating the use of European biobanks and health data registries further, EIT Health Scandinavia in collaboration with BBMRI-ERIC, have set up a six week online course providing an overview of biobanks across Europe. Our course “Navigating Biobanks - Unlocking Health Data for European Collaboration” offers an introduction on how to access and use them, presenting the national legislation that regulate sharing of biobank samples and data and the ethics of biological sampling.

Through engaging video modules, dynamic assessments and interactive sessions, delegates can explore the world of biobanks and discover how they can revolutionise medical advancements.

Welcome to register for the online course to further enhance your skills and knowledge of European biobanking. Explore the EIT Health Biobanks and Health Data Registries platform, aiding to navigate the biobanks and complement the hands-on training.
