Envac’s breakthrough in Finland

In cooperation with YIT, Envac Scandinavia AB (subsidiary of Envac AB) has been selected to deliver waste disposal systems for the two new city districts, Kalasatama (the Fish Harbour in English) and Jätkäsaari (The Western Harbour)  in Swedish) in Helsinki, Finland. The client is the City of Helsinki through its two subsidiaries, Fiskehamnen Sopsug AB and Busholmen Sopsug AB. The installation of the Envac waste disposal system is expected to begin in 2011 and be completed in 2030 when the last buildings are completed.

The Fish Harbour and the Western Harbour are currently the most high-profile construction projects underway in Finland. The area will grow into two new, ultra-modern, urban centers with high architectural ambitions. The height of certain buildings in the Fish Harbour will be higher than any structures currently standing in Helsinki. Otherwise, the area is similar to Stockholm’s Hammarby Sjöstad project in density and design.

The Fish Harbour project will include housing for 20,000 residents and 8,000 work spaces when completed in 2030. The first phase of the Western Harbour project includes 1,000 apartments in the Utterhäll area and is slated for completion in 2011. On completion, the Western Harbour project will include a total of 16,000 residences and 6,000 work spaces.

Four separate categories of waste will be handled by Envac’s underground waste transport system – organic waste, newspaper/paper, cardboard and other waste material. Corrugated cardboard will be compressed by “resizers” and handled along with cardboard packaging as the same type of waste fraction. The waste is suctioned into two so-called double terminals.

The Envac facilities are planned to handle waste from both residential and commercial properties. Possible inclusion of a special kitchen waste system, known as Microvac, which is able to handle larger volumes of organic waste from restaurants is under consideration. The project is valued at €80 million for Envac and YIT.

The terminal in the Western Harbour is expected to be completed in autumn of 2012 while the system in the Fish Harbour is estimated to take another year.

The project was awarded in competition with several Finnish companies. Thanks to their extensive experience delivering large waste management projects worldwide, Envac, in cooperation with YIT, was able to convince the City of Helsinki that they were the right contractors for the project. Envac is proud of the collaboration with YIT.

Expected waste volume of the two projects in Helsinki (at completion):

The Western Harbour (764 waste chutes)

Total waste tonnage is estimated at 6,884 tons/year distributed as follows:

•  Residual 4,545.44 tons/year

•  Magazines/paper 3,304.32 tons/year

•  Organic food waste 1,652.16 tons/year

•  Corrugated cardboard/packaging 826.08 tons/year

The Fish Harbour (823 waste chutes)

Total waste tonnage is estimated at 7,534 tons/year distributed as follows:

•  Residual 4,972.44 tons/year

•  Magazines/paper 3,616.32 tons/year

•  Organic food waste 1,808.16 tons/year

•  Corrugated cardboard/packaging 904.08 tons/year

Additional Information:

Envac’s underground waste transport systems move and store waste and recycling material from households and businesses in residential, commercial and urban centers using underground conduits. The waste is transported by means of vacuum and air from the properties to a collection center where it is compacted for shipment to recovery or recycling facilities. The system improves living conditions and the urban environment, opens up valuable space and creates significant safety advantages for waste management. Managing waste in this manner is also appreciated because it facilitates the recycling and recovery process and significantly reduces litter and conventional waste transport issues.
