Fjällräven wins environmental award for ECO SHELL, their new series of shell garments

Fjällräven’s newly developed shell jacket Eco Trail has won environmental recognition by being awarded with the SOA Sustainability Award. The Scandinavian Outdoor Group gave the award to the jacket and the new waterproof and environmentally-friendly fabric Eco Shell.

Scandinavian Outdoor Awards (SOA) are handed out twice a year by a panel consisting of journalists and experts from leading European outdoor magazines. The award was established in 2006 by the Scandinavian Outdoor Group, an industry association consisting of around 20 Nordic outdoor companies.

“The ultimate goal of SOA is to stimulate innovation and product development in Nordic companies. The judging panel receives a large number of products to evaluate each year, so the competition is stiff. What is extra awarding is that companies investing in environmental and ethical issues are seeing that it can be profitable,” says Martin Kössler, General Secretary of the Scandinavian Outdoor Group.

"We are, of course, extremely happy and proud to have been awarded the SOA Sustainability Award. We have been searching for an environmentally friendly alternative for our waterproof collection for a long time and we believe we have taken a giant leap forward with the launch of our Eco-Shell programme. This award is proof that we are on track. In five years the majority of our collection will be made from eco friendly fabrics,” says Fjällräven’s CEO Martin Axelhed.

The panel explained its decision to award the Sustainability Award Summer 2011 to the Eco Trail Jacket:

Functional, waterproof, breathable jacket that meets more than just one eco friendly criteria. Fjällräven's Eco Trail Jacket is not only fully recyclable (Eco Circle™), fluorocarbon-free and made from recycled polyester. The manufacturer also compensates for the unavoidable carbon dioxide emissions that arise in production and transport by supporting renewable energy projects that have been approved by the UN and certified according to the WWF-supported Gold Standard.”

The panel of judges consisted of the German magazines, Outdoor Magazin, Sport Fachhandel and NORR, Austrian Land der Berge, Swedish Utemagasinet and Sportfack as well as Op Pad Magazine from the Netherlands.
