Did you enjoy My Norwegian Holiday? Find out what’s correct and not from a Norwegian point of view
It's always great to see movies that take place in Bergen, and we totally love My Norwegian Holiday. But as with all movies there are also some things in the movie that aren't correct. So on behalf of Bergen and Norway we in Visit Bergen decided to create this unceremonious list of: Yes and No, this is how we do it in Norway. Presented with a large sprinkling of Christmas Spirit.
-Yes, quite a few Norwegians eat waffles with brown cheese, but seldom for breakfast
-Yes, there is a wedding tradition of the morning gift (morgengave), but this gift is primarily given the morning AFTER the wedding
-Yes, many Norwegians bake "krumkaker" for Christmas
-Yes, you can see the Northern Lights in Bergen, but we're lucky if it happens more than two or three times every winter
-Yes, we do have a custom in Norway where we hold hands and walk around the Christmas tree
-No, Bryggen is not a shopping street. There are some shops in the front and alleyways at Bryggen, but Bryggen is primarily a Unesco World Heritage site that consists of the old Hanseatic wharf and buildings
-No, there's no tradition in Norway where the groom proposes again on the wedding day. In Norway it's actually thought to be bad luck if the groom sees the bride on the wedding day before she walks up the aisle
-No, we normally don't change our clothes after the wedding ceremony
-Rallarvegen is actually a famous 28 kilometer long bike route between Haugastøl and Flåm, not a road where a woman would normally cross with two children
-The clips where Henrik and JJ exits from the airport is NOT the airport, it's a different place in Bergen. BUT you will find the Bergen? sign outside of the airport
We know many wonder what the Bergen? sign means. It’s an art piece, and like most art pieces it’s meant to create attention and discussion. Which is exactly what the Bergen? sign does. Come to Bergen and see for yourself.
