The iconic Trollstigen road to reopen 11 July

Trollstigen - opens Friday 11 July at 10.00

The county road administration of Møre og Romsdal confirms that the opening of Trollstigen will take place on Friday 11 July at 10.00.

The rockfall mitigation work carried out on the iconic hairpin bends of Trollstigen over the past year, has come to an end. The county road administration confirms that the opening of Trollstigen will take place on Friday 11 July at 10:00.

"After the safety work that has been carried out, Trollstigen is considered safe enough for traffic. We have clear routines for closing the road if there is heavy rainfall due to the risk of falling rocks, but apart from that, no further work or closures are planned. A larger project to secure the entire Trollstigen is planned for the future, but this depends on toll funding and is still a few years away. The road is considered safe, but travelers must always respect the forces of nature and, like any road in exposed natural surroundings, there will always be a potential for unforeseen incidents," says Torgeir Bye, Section manager for road operations at Møre og Romsdal county administration.

"We are delighted that the hairpin bends at Trollstigen will soon reopen," says Trine Kanter Zerwekh, Senior Advisor at Norwegian Scenic Routes. She also emphasises that the café and viewpoints on the Trollstigen plateau are open, and that it is possible to hike the Kløvstien trail between the foot of Trollstigen and the plateau at the top.

"We are very pleased that Trollstigen is finally reopening after the extensive repair work that has been carried out. The entire tourism industry in the region has been waiting for this, and now we can finally welcome visitors to an open and safer road between Åndalsnes and Valldal once again,” says Torunn Dyrkorn, Head of Tourism at Visit Northwest, and Tom Anker Skrede, Head of Tourism at Destination Ålesund & Sunnmøre.

Destination Ålesund & Sunnmøre, Visit Northwest and the local tourism industry appreciate that the work has progressed so smoothly and look forward to welcoming guests again to experience the entire stretch of the

Trollstigen, also known as the Trolls’ Road, is a famous mountain road featuring eleven sharp hairpin bends that wind up from the Isterdalen valley near Åndalsnes to the mountain plateau. The road connects the mountaineering capital of Norway, Åndalsnes, with Valldal – known as the Adventure Valley, and also famous for its sweet strawberries and fruit production. The road is part of the Norwegian Scenic Route Geiranger-Trollstigen, which runs from the UNESCO World Heritage Site Geirangerfjord, through Valldal and Trollstigen to Åndalsnes.

Trollstigen is usually open from mid-May until the snow returns in late autumn.
The viewing platform at the Trollstigen plateau, with access from Valldal, sometimes opens earlier and has been open since mid-April this year. The viewpoint hovers 200 metres above the Trollstigen road that snakes up the steep mountainside.
