Scottish Government Grants Consent for Crystal Rig Solar Project
Dunbar, 31 July 2025 — Fred. Olsen Renewables is pleased to announce that the Scottish Government’s Energy Consents Unit (ECU) has granted consent for the development of the Crystal Rig Solar project, marking a significant milestone in Scotland’s transition to a low-carbon energy future, and Fred. Olsen Renewables’ first Solar project consent in the UK.
Located within the existing Crystal Rig Wind Farm in East Lothian and the Scottish Borders, the Crystal Rig Solar project will integrate a large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) array and battery storage system into one of the UK’s most established renewable energy sites. The project is designed to complement the existing wind infrastructure, enhancing energy generation consistency and site efficiency.
Euan Hutchison, Development Director at Fred. Olsen Renewables, commented:
“We are delighted to receive consent for Crystal Rig Solar. This project represents a major step forward in our commitment to delivering innovative, sustainable energy solutions. By combining wind, solar, and battery storage on one site, we are maximising the potential of Crystal Rig and supporting Scotland’s net-zero ambitions.”
The application, submitted in May 2024, was informed by extensive environmental assessments and community consultations. The final design reflects feedback from local stakeholders and aims to minimise environmental impact while delivering long-term benefits to the surrounding communities.
Crystal Rig Solar is expected to comprise of 50,000 solar Photovoltaic panels, with a capacity of generating up to 27.5 Megawatts of clean electricity, powering up to 21,000 homes, and will contribute to local economic development through an index linked community benefit funding of £13,750 per annum, as well as job creation during construction and operation.
