Josefine Radonné and Felicia Liljeroth are both newly qualified second officers at Furetank and a couple. They serve on separate vessels, spend half their time passing each other across European waters, but share coordinated schedules and make the most of their time together – and apart. They see real advantages in being a couple in the maritime industry.
In a traditionally male-dominated industry, promoting gender balance and equality should be a priority for any shipping company. Furetank's deliberate efforts have paid off in recent years, as the number of women in their ranks has tripled. But sexual harassment and differential treatment persist within the maritime sector, as one of Furetank's female crew members attests.
When the newbuilt tanker vessel Fure Vyl leaves the shipyard, Ailene Barrios heads the technical department on board. She is one of very few Filipino women in the business who have advanced to be a Chief Engineer. Furetank now hopes that more will follow.
