Camille Norment’s exhibition Lemma Dilemma is a poetic exploration of ideas about language, history and meaning, presented through a selection of new works that include sculptural, sonic installations, and drawing.
The Oslo-based American multimedia artist Camille Norment (b. 1970, USA) works in both contemporary art and music. Known for her large-scale sonic installations, Norment now turns inward in Lemma Dilemma with works that unfold as meditative expressions.
She draws direct inspiration from the French term essayer, meaning "to work through," and uses the exhibition as a process of coming to terms with, and possibly transcending, the troubled world of today.
– Camille Norment offers something personal in this exhibition, as she herself describes as “an intimacy like a circular breath”. Her poetic work reaches its form and presence through conceptual spaces and becomes re-forming of histories—active and alive, says curator Maria C. Havstam.
Central to this exhibition lies a double principle: Lemma and dilemma: Lemma represents a canonical unit of meaning, whereas Dilemma describes a situation of conflicting choices and viewpoints.
This is expressed in the works by a range of conceptual ideas and forms, which can evolve, re-form and be viewed from different perspectives:
As in the Spawn (2025) series, a paradigm of sound – the singing bowl – is split in two, then re-composed into different sculptural forms. Some resemble seed pods opened for generative reproduction, others recall the position making of a cairn.
And the series Petalfugue (2025) layer frail drawings on acetate between glass panels, created through repetitive meditative gestures of dotting spiralling forms. These shapes give the impression of both dynamic movement, outwards and inwards, and in stasis.
In the exhibition’s namesake work, Lemma Dilemma (2026), two rooms almost mirror each other in form and content, one looping a monotone spoken-wordplay, the other sparsely “ghost-mirroring” the first with sung words, both in the artist’s own voice. The text is itself a meditation on meaning and experience, expressed through the exploration of words and the psychological means of song – a contemplation on the fragile socio-political environment.

Norment explores sociocultural and psychological phenomena through what she calls cultural psychoacoustics: how context, form, space, and the viewer's body interact in the formation of physical and cognitive experiences.
